Looking back on 2019, I didn't get anything of note done and it's making me think a bit.

I have some friends who have made extremely difficult achievements in a variety of areas.
Then others (such as myself) are still shitting around doing absolutely nothing, not fulfilling their potential if they even have any, etc.

The ones accomplishing shit are not necessarily smarter or better than the ones wasting their life away. They just work harder with almost single-minded focus at the thing they're interested in.
What I wonder is why? Could it be genetic? Are underachievers just bound to be who they are? Are there genes associated with conscientiousness?

Biologist here. Everything is genetic, especially the potential to do hard work and achieve. It seems like you are genetic deadwood, destined for mediocrity or failure.

Sociologist here. Nothing is genetic, especially not the potential to do hard work and achieve. It seems like you are an environmental product, capable of failure or success based on environmental factors.

Math Bio undergrad here, yes its genetic; your cock sucking is congenital and likely terminal. I’m sorry you weren’t aborted

>Twin studies and other research have shown that about half of the variation between individuals results from their genetics and half from their environments.

Discipline = ability to delay gratification = people with high conscientiousness = conservatism (not political but long term cautious) = high IQ = genetic

Half? Really? That sounds too unlikely to be true. That's some BS the """researchers""" invented.

Discipline isnt real. The choices you make have nothing to do with this amorphous idea of discipline. Its all about motivation, how much you want something determines whether you will do anything

somewhat idk

I disagree, its all about how much you want something. If there is someone who really wants to get an a in class, he will study very hard, while the guy who is apathetic about getting an a will put in just enough to pass

I just feel like nothing is worth putting real effort into, is it possible that there is a problem in the motivational center of my brain

but what determines what you want and how much you want it?

Genetics, or your soul, and the information you have.

>conscientiousness = high IQ
false

OP here. That was what I always thought but I wonder if it's an oversimplification.

Let me give some examples to explain a bit more:
So a few are traditional examples of achievement it's easy to conclude "genetics => high IQ => delayed gratification => achievement": getting professorships, starting companies, etc.

A more interesting case is a guy who was NEET for ~4 years after getting his meme CS degree, but taught himself moon to a fluent level, and now works as a developer in Osaka and rang in 2020 with some qtpi waifu. That's certainly not an example of discipline and compromise, but due to his hard work and IQ he was able to make his weeb dream real.

The most interesting case is still an incel and NEET, but is now a top 0.001% player in a certain video game, he makes a little money streaming and playing tournaments. With a little luck maybe he'll be able to actually make it. Still, regardless of whether he becomes "successful" in the monetary sense, he is elite at the thing he does, and it took him a ton of effort to do so.
Even though he's devoted himself to a low IQ pursuit, doesn't have the discipline to say "no" to video games, etc. he's still a high achiever at SOMETHING, not just an average guy, to me this makes him more admirable than a lot of people that delayed gratification and are just nameless cogs in their field
