One of the most important and often ignored things to prevent tooth decay is to keep your teeth reasonably clean throughout the day. Simple things such as rinsing thoroughly with water after every meal, eating veggies after every meal, eating only few times per day and not snacking all the time, not eating anything after brushing, avoiding sticky sugars, actually doing something about it when you feel something stuck or dirty on your teeth.

You basically need to deprive mouth bacteria of their food sources as much as possible.

Go to amazon and buy a dental kit with magnifying mirrors. You can also get a good, "dental water pik/water flosser," in addition to the standard tools (read reviews frist). Learn how to gently clean your own teeth without causing problems with your gums or enamel. You should be able to do it far better than a dental assistant because you'll be able to feel it directly. The cost of the supplies will cost about the same as 1 dentist's visit, but they are reusable. So, they should pay for themselves the very first time you use them. You'll be able to do it far faster than taking part of your day to commute to and from the dentist's office and sit in their chair. They should last a life time.

A few years ago, I went on a water fast for 10 days. It consisted of me drinking water and taking a vitamin pill. Good god, I had to clean my mouth a few times each day. It is crazy how much your food actually helps clean your teeth throughout the day. Alcohol at mouthwashes should be something like 20%, and if "it dessicates and irritates gums, and is even suspected of increasing mouth cancer rate." then necessarily it should be effective enough to qualify as a good antiseptic, you dim. All antiseptics irritate tissue, alcohol can't dry up your mouth though because there is plenty saliva to irrigate cells by osmosis. Alcohol is a great antiseptic because it acts as solvent, and coagulates protein ripping apart anything as small as bacteria.

I've had a lot of teeth problems, from not taking care of them as a child, and I've found bone marrow pills to keep them from getting cavities. It works for me and I have no idea. I do the regular tooth hygiene stuff with it. Any time I feel my teeth hurt and I take these pills daily and my teeth basically stop hurting within the next day or next few days. I like my electric toothbrush (oral-b) much more than "manual" toothbrushes. It cleans better and easier. It's expensive though, and the brush head replacements are expensive as well.

A toothpaste that includes novamin might be an upgrade. I'm looking for one that has novamin and a good concentration of fluoride (having both is better, I wouldn't drop fluoride to have novamin).
