I think the assumption is dark side of earth does not retain energy/heat and doesn't produce energy/heat. That's obviously wrong, but that might be what OP is suggesting

No one on this board thinks.
That's the problem.
Others have already done all of the thinking for them.
It's one big circle jerk of coomers who think they sound intelligent by saying the word "science" over and over again.
The earth is obviously flat and anyone who denies that has either not done the research or is a coom brain who doesn't understand that he's been manipulated since childhood by various powerful forces in order to be more easily controlled as adults(if you can even call these soicucks "adults").

It's spinning really fast so it never has time to cool down- kind of like a roast on a spit. Indeed if the earth were larger or closer in like mercury it would become tidally locked (a function of the bodies' sizes being mathematically large compared to the distances between them). Differences between the sun's gravitational pull on the front of the planet vs the back would tend to slow rotation until the planet had stopped- tidal locking.

If this happened to the earth, the front would fry and the back would freeze. The one saving grace is that mass air currents resulting from the temp difference would result in some circulative heating. In the case of Mercury where there's truly no atmosphere, the front is a hellscape and the back is a frozen hellscape.

Gravity varies inversely with the square of distance, and on the scale of one AU the earth is like a mathematical point with no size compared to the sun. The slope of the gravity well on the sunward side is essentially the exact same as on the antisunward side because the distances are the same and thus relative force is the same. Compare that to the moon, which is big and close enough that Earth stopped its rotation over millenia. In fact the moon is exerting a similar force on the Earth, which increases the amount of time in a day by a miniscule amount each day. The sun will destroy the earth before complimentary tidal locking can occur but if it had time, one side of earth would always face the moon like it does to us and a day would last roughly what a month does now.

Okay, contradict me with no supporting evidence. Ignoring anything about Newton's law of gravitation is the simple concept of thermal mass. We deal with it every day. Specific heat- joules energy per degree temp increase per unit mass. You multiply that number by mass and you get "thermal mass". Take a pizza out of the oven and you can touch the aluminum foil you put the pizza on right away because it has no thermal mass. Cut steel with an angle grinder and the sparks don't hurt because again they have miniscule thermal mass. Touch that pizza or the barstock right after you cut it? You'll burn the shit out of yourself. The atmosphere has truly massive thermal mass, but it's finite. And indeed it cools down from dusk to dawn. But before it can get truly fucking cold it's morning.

SPOILER: The surface temperature on Mercury's North Pole, which permanently faces opposite the Sun, is below 180° K (-137° F, -93.15° C), because Mercury is tidally locked.

This means Mercury, otherwise the second-hottest planet after Venus, and the closest to the Sun, has a spot where temperatures are lower than anywhere on Earth, precisely because of its tidal locking.

If the Earth stopped spinning or somehow got tidally locked, the side permanently at "night", would freeze over too. It doesn't because the air and water keep much of their warmth during night time until the new day cycle heats it up again.

This also explains why deserts, where the atmosphere has less moisture, have more extreme day-night temperature variations, than humid regions, since water retains heat better than air does.

Now please KYS, /pol/ autist.

The Earth produces a lot of heat internally, and it takes a lot longer for the surface of the earth, the atmosphere, and all the oceans, to cool to winter levels, then the length of a single night.

>>11245055
>tidal locking stops rotation
That's not how tidal locking works.

Tidally locked bodies rotation matches the rotation of the parent body, so that the same face is always facing toward the parent body. It doesnt actually stop the rotation of the affected body though. It's more like a stable gravitational interaction between the bodies and their rotation rates.
