Math shouldn't stand it the name of progress.
We do math for the same reason we play and instrument and go to the cinema - we like it and it's entertaining.

There's a point to be made that the institution that is the university provides tax funded research and it ought to have positive outcome. However, the universities - especially in the US - have long been corrupted by capitalism and the idea that mathematicans must work to improve the well-being of society has been displaced together with the idea that university is a job-education. We must tear it down to build it up.
Don't demand use-value at this point in time.

Politics is cancerous gordian knot where you have no power unless you were born in the right context. A regular day to day office job would lead me to suicide in a few months. I have almost no hope of ever getting with a woman I'm attracted to because of my (actual) autism and terrible looks. Sports feel shallow and meaningless to me.

Science and mathematics is one of the only fun things in my life. I believe that man only operates (uncounsciously as well as counsciously) with the aim of his own happiness. I have established a long time ago that I will not be happy by making others happy, even if I somehow found out that curing cancer was in my reach, I still wouldb't do it. Call me selfish if you want, but as far as I'm aware, my life could end at any second and I'll be damned if I die with regrets.
