women are more social and therefore aren't on the same sperg-level as male autists when it comes to social skills. they also tend to be more introverted and therefore it can be difficult to spot the symptoms. doctors are focused on autism how it is seen in males. when a women is a shy weirdo it usually isn't treated like a bad thing anyway vs weirdo men who get ostracized by society for being weirdos.
when some autistic woman goes to the doctor to get checked they don't notice it and diagnose her with depression, anxiety, bipolar, borderline, etc.

Aspie female here.
I got diagnosed during my last year of high school while being treated for generalized anxiety. Traits for female aspies are different from male ones; it's easier for us to blend in and we often hide our "stiffness" by adopting social norms by force.
I've always been very quiet and not that sociable, but apart from my kindergarden/primary school years, I was still able to form my own circle of people to keep in regular contact with (usually girls of the same kind). People would see my preference for quiet, solitary hobbies as a sign of diligence, instead of something to look into, and my awkwardness as a cute distinctive feature of my character, which I understand would've been different for a guy.
Aspie women's "obsessions" and fields of interest also tend to lean towards the arts, instead of the more analytical side of things preferred by men as popularly told by the media. I know some girls who are very successful in theatre-acting, because of their ability to absorb social conventions, which they're now using to make another characters actions their own.
About empathy, I also vouch for that one anon who said people who suffer from Asperger's are highly empathic. As an example, I personally have no problems reading facial expressions, but I do find it hard to make them myself, without forcing it.

Also, this is all from one single person's point of view and I'm telling all this based on my own experience. Of course the spectrum is very broad and there are no real exceptions as there can be all kinds of cases)
