I have not been around many mathematicians so I do not have an opinion on them, but coming from an engineering only university and currently doing my master's there I can tell you that I very much appreciated the fact that we received a well rounded training in order to understand the science which we use, but also project development schemes, economics and sociology of technology.

I must say that the point about healthy lifestyle generally was well proven from my experience : many of the strongest/fittest gym goers I see on a regular frequency on the whole campus sports center are from my school (about 8000/60 000 students) and most of the people I meet have very interesting hobbies and lifestyles. Friends from HS that went in other disciples don't report the same when I ask them about it, though none is is mathematics specifically.

This is pure bullshit though. An engineering degree (at least here in Canada) is absolutely no indicative of knowledge from my experience. Many a comrade benefited from the hard work of others in order to pass classes and I would never hire them based on knowledge deficit. In my opinion, a bachelor's only is an introduction to learning and does not prove anything more than a certain discipline to get up in the morning although you went to bed late the night before because of an assignment. I don't remember the specific quote that shaped my view on that, but it sounded like:

"The Bachelor degree teaches you that some problems that exist have known solutions, the Master's degree is where you will find a solution to an important problem that was given to you, and the PhD is where you will find your own problems, figure out their importance and solve them to share with the world."
