I want to grow cryptogamic soil crusts/biocrusts in a cold desert.
Do you think it’s really as simple as these papers make it sound?

Microbial Nursery Production of High-Quality Biological Soil Crust Biomass for Restoration of Degraded Dryland Soils.

Like pretty much just make a cold frame with the type of soil you want to inoculate, slurry your sample, apply, mist regularly and keep a bit shaded. Use sterile tools to reduce potential unknown pathogens - not unlike mycological standard practices.

Is there anything I’m missing?
If I want to be scientific about it, what might a methodology write-up for the process look like?

Start in a small localized area you will be able to visit frequently and observe changes and see if they match the papers and make changes depending on your observation

make semi-opaque glass house to condense moisture.

I enjoy that DOD grants are behind this research. The military tore up so much dirt with war games and exercises that they got worried about toxic dust storms blowing their toys into city populations
