K=king
Q=queen
R=rook
B=bishop
N=knight
and for pawns, you don't even need a letter for them because they can only move one direction, and capture in one way.

So, when you see an opening move that's just a square, like d4, or e4, or c4, that means the pawn on the d-file (in front of the queen, originally on the d2-square) is moved two squares forward to the d4-square.

If instead, you wanted to move the knight nearest the king to the f3-square, you would write 1.Nf3

Most of the time you will see a capture written with "x", but technically you don't need to, but helps when you're following the game. For example:

1.Nf3 e5
2.Nxf3 (the knight has captured Black's king-pawn which had moved to the e5-square)
