Don't. Trust me fucking don't. Playing with genetics will yield very fucked results, especially on the scale of large mammals. Diseases of nightmares. Was a geneticist in a large corporation that worked on genetically engineered bacteria. Bacteria would form being deformed, would randomly cease all biological function randomly, would aggressively asexually multiply, and would exhibit strange behaviors.

I would imagine in the case of catgirls you will need to perform some modification to the brain. Ears on top of the head will result in less volume within the cranium.

Addition to my original post, you could also design their brain to have an "Interface" of sorts with large naked bundles of neuronal endings to congregate near the Occipital bun(Back of head closest to skull) connected to various areas of the brain for a Computer-Brain interface to be installed when maturity has been achieved for memory uploading, triggering, and installation.
Regarding the genetic modification, we could modify the existing set of DNA, completely overhaul the genome and design one from scratch that develops into a human system, or make additions(extra chromosomes?) to the currently existing genome to "mount" changes onto a pre-existing foundation...
