We don't really know. There are different theories. You have Einsteins theory about spacetime. But that doesn't clearly clarify much.

The best theory imo is fields. Imagine reality to be a bunch of fluctuating quantum fields. We know that mass causes gravitation. Mass is equal to energy. And this may be linked to motion, which is what time really is.

All of this is linked to the speed of light, or causality.
