My favorite authors: Kafka, Dostoevski, Calvino.

I read some philsophy. Wittgenstein, Stirner, all the guys /lit/ hate. Then again, they hate all of them.
I really find Hegel attractive too, whether or not it's fishy.

/lit/ loved Stirner two or three years ago. Did something happen?

Hegel it's an interesting case. I find his writing far too obscure to the point I cannot differentiate if my (or any) interpretation is correct or not.
And even then, I wonder if it is worth the effort.

Yeah well all boards like and dislike something. Take category theory here.

Yes the "is it even worth it" thought may creep in with such philosphers, but then again it creeps in with anything you do. (Make enough money to live a comfy live? Why do stuff that makes more money and not something else want to spend your time with.) But I know that the fear of reading bullship is something a bit different. Still, I don't think there has to be a coherent intenion for there to be a valuable interpretation. Seems my author is dead.

I like the 3 or 4 lectures by this guy

I study math and neuroscience and on my own I'm really into reading philosophy and literature. The STEM people who are into /lit/ are those who enter STEM out of an intense curiosity to learn deeper insights about reality. Those who enter purely for the money usually don't care for the metaphysics and are only there to get what they need to land a job. There are a few who enter for the money despite being very creative and idea oriented, but they usually end up starving their aesthetic and intellectual sides and end up dissatisfied.

Unlikely, he didn't have many followers and died very early. He was one of the Young-Hegelians, drinking in Berlin pubs with Marx and Feuerbach and just arguing and criticising each other. Pic related is one of the sketches by Engels.

Most of my student peers are uninterested in literature as most people are.
I used to be totally uninterested, mostly stopped reading books in high school.
As I started uni I've started reading a bit more mostly to stop myself from ending up a total Fachidiot.
Currently reading up on some old greeks (and marx with the local commie sect, they sell very cheap books).
The general plan is to go from the ancient greeks to the romans then early christians and so on, we'll see how far i can be arsed

I'm not the guy, but imo a useful model for making these sorts of decisions is the one that game theory provides, try to write out the rules of the societal game, what your goals are in life, and how you can best abuse the rules to reach your goal as quickly as possible (without hurting others, at least in a direct way, sometimes you can't make money without it coming from a place where it's needed)

MD here, I would have probably studied History and Philosophy if it wasn't about unemployment or dick sucking academia.
Sometimes I envy those aristocrats of the XIXth century which were rich enough they could do it for shit and giggles.

That said I think we're seeing the slow death of literature, ever since the radio has been invented people:
1) read less and less
2) read things of worse and worse quality

Both while the production has exploded (which means more garbage to navigate through).
The competition for attention between radio, youtube, streaming, series, video games, tv, social media, etc... seems to be a race to the bottom.
