I see many posts in this thread discussing eugenics as applied and enforced by the government. What if eugenics was practiced and unforced at the individual level? what if we let the genetics of the child be entirely left up to the parents? I think this is a route we should go and abolish the ban on sex selection while we are at it nation wide.

Eventhough I'm rather normal my cousin and brother both have diagnosed autism (and I mean in the sense they spent their childhood on the small bus bus and going to special ed, not the "women don't like me so I must have autism le /sci/ poster") so I probably carry several unwanted genes.

I assume by eugenics you mean genetic engineering or something, not sterilizing people based on cosmetic traits that have no correlation to the enormous immune system diversity found in humans. On an individual level, there is nothing wrong with it, so long as it isn't compulsory. If parents want to choose their children's traits, whatever. On a social level, it creates problems. If it costs anything at all, people will do it as a status thing which can then devolve into a miserable caste-system society that will become unstable and dysfunctional. On a species level, it's retarded. Genetic homogeneity is never good for a species. Climate changes over the millennia, as do food sources and pathogens. Genetic diversity is very important for surviving these sorts of things, because no set of traits is better for every situation. Fitness of an individual is specific to context, whereas fitness of a species comes from genetic diversity.

On a species level, none of those mutations are harmful. If they kill you before you can reproduce, they were harmful and got purged with your death. If they didn't, then they're just added genetic diversity, which is good. The problem is purely a social one, as no one wants to be the person with cystic fibrosis. Which is patently retarded. The fact that other people have cystic fibrosis doesn't increase the chance that you will: you've already been born. The only real question is moral: should we test fetuses and mercy kill the ones that are likely to spend short lives in great pain and discomfort? I guess it depends on how bad it is but I have no idea where that line should be drawn.

No, for two reasons. First, engineering takes time. If we homogenize the population and a highly lethal and contagious virus spreads, we might be able to engineer humans who are resistant to it but that won't save the rest of the population that has already been born. They can repopulate the species after the vast majority of humans are wiped out, but that will leave a small population with limited genetic diversity. It is much, much better if we have high genetic diversity to begin with so more people survive the epidemic and so that those who do have better diversity to survive the next epidemic. Second, making deliberate changes to large portions of the population will have unintended consequences down the line that could hobble if not kill the species. Specificity is weakness.
