don't study stem. they are pushing stem to drive down wages. studying something like law/economics has much better returns.

working conditions of stem professions, especially engineering is horrible. pay is incredibly low for starting pay, and even after 10 years of experience you barely make more than a 20 year old plumber.

there is no stem shortage. the "stem shortage" for companies is not being able to find an engineer with 15+ years of experience for janitor pay.

all my friends who studied accounting/finance make more than i while all my engineering friends did unpaid internships for months only to get shit jobs
you have been warned. drop out immediately. maybe the only exception is CS

don't study stem. physics and mechanical engineering double major here. stem shortage is a meme. you will be severely underpaid due to no overtime payments(salary agreements). work is high stress because of unreasonable deadlines, so you have to pull overtime to finish stuff and you don't get paid for those. if you can't finish it you get bullied & fired and replaced.

there is no shortage of stem people either. the only shortage is for 5+ year experienced STEM people who wouldn't work for scraps. if you want a real salary good luck getting a job.

study business, finance, law or medicine instead of STEM. all of them will pay better unless you are really a dumbass. people often compare average salaries of a "business" major and an "engineer" but if you are smart enough to be an "average" engineer than you'll be in top 10% of business majors anyway. most people seem to overlook that.

i think STEM has the lowest ROI for any degree. people compare 4 years to 4 years as in investment(as if studying STEM and non STEM requires the same effort) but in STEM you grind your ass to get your degree while non-STEM people do fuckall and enjoy their lives and at the end of the day the salary difference(speaking for us) is around 20000~ / yr.(max). but the amount of stress and autism you endure is worth way more than 20000$.

dont fucking study stem. its horrible.

1. engineers are easily replaceable(thats the thing that makes it low pay). people often say this is not true, sure its harder to replace than a worker but much easier to replace than even a HR manager you can trust. because engineering requires no trust or loyalty.

2. supply & demand. there are too many new graduates, plus there is the H1B. all indians and chinese arestudying engineering. you only need few engineers to run most stuff, you need workers.

3. people will just work for less pay because of "le science" and its "le fun". thats how tesla/spacex underpays everyone. they are "taking le humanity" forward.

4. horrible work life balance/pay conditions happen because engineers are willing to comprimise. try making a normal worker work in factory without overtime and he will drop immediately. engineers are just corporate suckers.

>> No.11048349

I mean finance/accounting is basically STEM. They are at least both very math heavy. If you can get into a top tier school then finance might be a good bet, but if you can't then accounting or actuarial work are pretty nice jobs. But at that pay level you aren't going to be making any more than the engineers.

You're best bet is probably a mathematics degree because everyone finds it impressive, and then try to learn python.

normally companies want to pay the lowest salary possible while workers want the highest

since demand can be predicted(reasonably atleast for job market), they just want to flood the supply to underpay

they also brainwash stemtards with "le science" propaganda so they doN't bargain and accept whatever the company offers.

I live in a midsize east coast city, 100k is like 150k in commiefornia salary for anybody wondering. Basically upper 25% of salary range. The climb up to that 100k salary is going to be pretty chill, aswell. I'll take 50,000 starting that is fucking 22.00 an hour lmao.

>Muh research doesn't pay well
You ever ask your professor about their experiences in the private sector? Most people with PHD's and Doctorates definitely pursue money, they shouldn't be ashamed either.

It's really a great thing that people who are contributing to space flight, electric cars, etc. are being paid so well. I really admire those people.

Everybody wants a decent place, decent car, most people learn a lot from high level challenging jobs (I know this to be especially true in IT, can't say for other fields).

Inter-weaving between collegiate and private sector is really common. Very few PHD's are actually just chilling and do research 99% of the time.

Honestly dude I kind of look down on anybody who goes into a career just for money. I really do think people should follow their passions, you'll be a lot happier in the long run. Now I'm fortunate because my passion happened to be STEM, but i know a lot of people who went into it for the money, and despite making pretty decent salaries they're all miserable because, surprise surprise, you spend most of your waking life at work.

Having said that I'll lay my cards on the table:

>double major
>starting salary for me was about 60k
>now, about 8 years into my career I make ~120k
>recently turned down a 145k job because i like what i'm doing and don't want to move
>they've upped their offer so now i'm re-thinking it

Bottom line - follow your passions. You'll work harder if you like what you're doing and you'll be happier.

>> No.11049352

People need to realize that junior engineers are the ones getting their wages suppressed the hardest. When u got 0 years of experience, how much leverage do you think you have if you try to negotiate the offer you're given? That leverage is extremely small, cus you bring nothing to the table. A sad reality.

https://www.indeed.com/cmp/JPMorgan-Chase/salaries?location=US%2FNY%2FNew+York

As you can see, the jobs in JPMorgan you can get with a CS, Engineering, or Mathematics degree generally pay just as well as those you could get with a finance degree if not better.

Nah, the problem are the faggots like OP that bloat up the market just looking for easy shekels and then whine like bitches when the promise of rainbows, butterflies and endless pots of gold turns out to not be true, as anyone with common sense would expect. People who are in it for the fun of it usually stand out in the market and end up being better off anyways so in the long run they aren't quite as miserable and don't have to fight like vultures over a rotting corpse like the vast majority of new engies looking for low paying jobs.
