It shouldn't be humans to Mars in 50 years it should be humans to Mars in 10

>> No.1104443

Humans don't belong on Mars or on the Moon. They should stay on Earth.

the only way any sort of manned permanent colony on ANY non-earthlike planet will EVER exist...is for us to make some sort of power source that puts out more energy than we put into it. That's the only way to feasibly have a long term colony that could process water, air, and other things needed.

Things never "belong" somewhere. They're just there because it happened.

Whether human beings can stand extraterrestrial environment or not is a different story.

giant nuclear reactor, or small practical fusion reactor.

Fusion would be ideal since the fuel source would be much easier to come across interstellar

Dude.

Just get a nuclear reactor, or a few photovoltaic cells. If you can get that far, why not leave a solar satellite around the planet before planetfall? According to your logic we will never have enough energy for the entire planet, which is not true.

Lol retard just get the fuck out.

Even though I'm all for space exploration, the FIRST EVER step is developing cheap and efficient ways of getting stuff into space, something along the lines of the Sea Dragon rocket which can put 1000 tonnes in orbit at an amazingly low cost or a super-large space plane.

After cheap commercial access to space is provided, the rest of the story should write itself.

You forgot your arguments, just stating a worthless opinion. OP's post at least is a quote of someone who have made a strong case for entering Mars.

And who are you out of curiosity? I guess you're the one who naysay every space-related thread, but IRL? And why do you come here on /sci/?

I'm all for space exploration but if it actually serves a purpose. The way things are now, doing manned spaceflight is stupid and a dick-waving contest.

If we could mine asteroids and shit I'd be all for it but let's get real, it can't be done. Manned spaceflight should be axed entirely in favor of probes.

Mining the asteroids can be done with today's tech. It's not like Artificial Intelligence or the Singularity, it's something that can be done today.

For the price of celebrity divorce fees we could put a rotovator(I think this is the correct term?) in orbit made of conventional materials that we could use to bootstrap our way to cheap space launch.

I forget the paper, but when I googled the cost of it I found a celebrity divorce payment that cost more. Heck a movie would cost more than an orbital rotovator.

Detractors will note, however, that rotovators are unproven technology and there are many challenges to deploying and maintaining a tether in space.

We should start moving into space at the earliest opportunity. Otherwise we won't make full use of our adaptability and learning, and the universes only proven intelligent creature will be putting all its eggs in one basket with earth.

However because of the genetic development that would ensue... humans need to create some sort of failsafe so we don't eventually end up in some gigantic war with our distant relatives.

Not really the tethers momentum will keep it taught.

But still I prefer the idea of using a mass driver to launch gear into space.
