They’re brains are bigger, they pass the mirror test, they have funerals, they can paint from memory, etc. But their anatomy limits them in so many ways. They don’t have complex vocal systems, or functional hands and fingers, they’re really large, etc. If you put an elephant brain in a baby human, then that human would grow up pretty similar to a humans. Put a human brain in a baby elephant and it will grow up like an elephant. It’s not like it’s just gonna start inventing fire or anything. It’s gonna learn the ways of elephants and be content and have no reason to stray from normal behavior

They actually have a complex system of vocalization that relies on sounds we humans can't perceive, their trunks can be hands, and I'm not quite sure what size has to do with anything beyond the caloric needs to run a civilization. Caloric needs also strictly restrict how much time you can spend doing non-survival stuff. Humans are pretty small and efficient and even we spent quite a lot of our early history subsisting because our capabilities could only just supply the nutrition our big beautiful brains needed. Elephants might have to spend too much time eating to ever have the time to invent tools, even if they did have more than one "hand" with only two "fingers".

Pretty much this. Why would an elephant need to develop something like civilization when its current lifestyle affords it a good few decades of life assuming its not killed by poachers? Elephants have evolved to the point where pretty much nothing fucks with them on the savannah except for humans. During our evolution, we were prey for basically anything larger than a dog. We had to adapt and use technology to survive, because if we didn't a cheetah was going to have us for lunch.

Severely physically disabled humans (like paraplegics) can in principle achieve the same level of cognition and knowledge as other people. If elephants were really that smart, then we should have plenty of exames of elephants with human-like cognition and knowledge who were bred and raised by us. Their brain to mass ratio is nothing special, meaning most of the reason their brain is bigger is because their brain has more muscles and components it needs control over, not because of higher intelligence. "paint from memory" is a very obscure detail as they've only been observed to be able to paint very specific images their instructors have trained them to do over and over again in turn for a reward like food, which is nothing special. They don't paint from their own memory or creativity. There isn't even much sign of them having the capabilities of creativity at all. They communicate trough body language so even if they had vocal cords they wouldnt know how to, nor be able to learn to speak. People have spent lifetimes studying their behavior and theres no signs of them having language. Elephants are clever and expressive animals, but their intelligence being anywhere near human capabilities is just a fantasy youve invented for yourself
