Starship. It is a starship. The architecture, if everything works out, should be capable of landing humans on any planet or moon in the solar system (except Venus, Mercury and the gas giants, each for obvious reasons). Right now it's a stainless steel water tower with three advanced rocket engines and some wings.

They made it smaller modular because its cheaper to do so than to spend exorbant amount of time/effort on creating a much larger piece. Cost/time sacrifices. If we could produce a fully pieced long together steel that cost less time/effort/money than multiple modular pieces welded together, they would.

A fully fueled BFR stack going RUD would quite literally release the same amount of energy as a decent sized nuclear bomb. The explosion would be in the several kiloton range.
That being said, this energy is released rather slowly as the fuel combusts and does not produce a super strong shockwave, but there would be a gigantic fireball.

Reminder, the entire 12,000 Starlink launch/build cost 12 billion dollar.

Suppose SpaceX gets 20 million customers paying $50 per month for a year. That's $12 billion covered in 1 year. Or lets just say only 5 million people use Starlink @ $50 for gigabit. Then in 4 years, they can pay their cost.

In 5 years, Starship will do the launches and they would have reduced the cost of launching satellites to 1/10th the price and the satellites would probably be much cheaper/robust than current gen's satellites. Thus SpaceX could offer 1 gigabit for $20/$30 and still make profit and kill every one else in the industry.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued waiting for it to start and I heard him chuckle as I walked off.

Logistics? FedEx will have a fleet of them. Space yachts. Space hotels. Every company that wants to do microgravity research can just fucking charter a Starship. If it's actually 747 cheap to operate, it will become 747 common.

bad stage positioning, musk, the rocket, and the screen are all competing for the audience's attention

ya'll should watch the original BFR presentation to get a better idea of how Musk usually presents. this one is pretty bad.

seriously though he could get a teleprompter, prepare a speech, get some training to get rid of the stutter, maybe some meditation and breathing exercises. Or just let an employee do it.

Or maybe just leave out the "um"s and the "ah"s. Consciously pausing instead of doing that will make a HUGE difference.

This is actually the first presentation I've watched by him.
Look man, I suffer from a really bad stutter. So I know how its like going up on stage with one self conscious that I'll look like a retard. But I make up for that stutter by timing my sentences in a way to try and avoid it, by keeping a steady flow so the interruptions don't look too bad, and by actually practicing the fucking speech so I don't spend half the time going "umm"
This guy is a fucking billionaire. He can hire a professional to coach him and he can afford a good speech writer to make up for his deficiencies. Instead he goes up on stage fucks around by barely remembering his speech, going on random rants that don't tie together, and making his entire company look like like a clown show. If the CEO looks like shit the company looks like shit.

Now the spaz is going on about Area 51 what the fuck is his problem.

Payload has been bumped back up to 100-150T, which is closer to what the original 10m design promised. Also, animation suggests that the landing will be on a concrete pad next to the tower and launch mount, which is more conservative than trying to land on the mount itself (good luck with that on a windy day like today).

Other than that, and confirmation of reusable ceramic tiles for the heat shield, not much. The real meat of the night is most likely going to come from the Q&A that's supposed to start in a few minutes.

This anon got it right, never trust Elon. At least twice the time and half the capability. Orbital flights will only happen end of next year at best. Human launch will only happen in 2021. The payload will be at best 50 tons, so less 99.9 % of earth's launch capability and more like 50%. For all of his boasting, I doubt Starship can launch the pressurised volume of the ISS in a single flight, maybe half at that with probably only 50 people. The presentation was mostly just a recap of stuff that we already knew about, plus a couple short animations showing off the latest revisions to the design. The only real piece of news was pushing the expected payload margin from 50T back up to 100-150T where it had been before last year's presentation, which says good things about engine performance and weight mitigation.

The meat was, as usual, in the Q&A, where Elon was quite visibly far more comfortable. Mk. 1 is expected to fly in a month or so, a hop, then hop to 20km/65,000', possibly orbital after that (he's said before that Starship is *barely* SSTO with no payload, so they might not need SH for re-entry testing). Landing will be at the launch site, which explains why they're buying out Boca Chica. After Mk. 1/2, they plan Mk. 3/4 (also built on-site at Boca&Cape), with less slapdash manufacturing (planning to invest in equipment to build each ring out of a single sheet of steel--maybe a use for their defunct 9m mandrel?). Production of *everything* is expected to continue ramping up to insane levels (he expects 1/day Raptor production by spring), and potentially 3-4 flights/day per Starship and ~20/day per SH (the difference being the wait time for Starship's orbit to carry it back over the LZ). That's... insane.
