How to into deriving formulas for patterns? I can do basic shit but im getting stuck on this one.

1,2,3,2,1,2,3,2,1,etc

How do I train to become good at deriving formulas from patterns? Open an algebra book?

A formula? You mean like, find the number for the nth term?
If that's the case, I would note that the sequence repeats every 4, and can be modeled with cyclical functions, then write something like Xn=2 - cos(pi*n/2)

Draw a graph, and assume how would you continue that graph.
