Don't start discussing pro- and anti-vax shit because it degenerates and takes a lot of replies.

Are you joking dude? Canadian schools are a fuckin nightmare. For starters we have less than 20 vs the USA's 160+. 2 or 3 of them you need to be able to speak French, one of them is reserved only for rural medicine/rural applicants, most schools favour in province applicants and if you're from Ontario you're even worse off. Not to mention that most schools don't take international students and the ones that do accept maybe 1 or 2 per YEAR. Telling him to apply to Canadian schools with a 3.49 is basically just telling him to waste his money. He has a good shot at a DO school. I'm fuckin Canadian and will probably be moving to Australia or Ireland for med school because of how fuckin mental the system here is. In the US you can get into a low tier MD school or DO school with a GPA of like 3.5-3.7, I've seen even less than that. In Canada that GPA is mostly a death sentence (mine is 3.6). Most schools here don't even give a fuck about MCAT. 4 or 5 of them don't even require it and a couple only weigh the CARS sections.

Pretty rough day today but I feel good about it. Heard some rhales in a kid today and had to do diff diagnosis with only that, fever, and a normal ECG until the bloodwork arrived.

For me, it was pneumonia. Common in children, has a brutal debut and also explains the fever and rules out some heart conditions considering the normal ECG (the kid was slightly tachy but insignificant).

And I got my heart broken today because I had to visit the PICU. So many children ranging from a pretty fucked up shape to critical condition I can't even...I just had to get some papers to my Prof (she's a pediatrician and also works in the PICU) and asked about a little girl in critical condition. Apparently she fell from the 5th floor and had bruising under her eyes which means most of the times heavy cranian trauma. I don't know anymore guys, it's kind of hard to digest the fact that even children can get in this kind of trouble.

Why do you think it's worse in the psych ward instead on the PICU? I get that there are children with schizophrenia and other disorders but I can't see how it is any worse than children in critical condition.

General sci/med question
My family recently got a new well drilled since our old one was ancient and contaminated.
Our water ended up coming out with a slight brown/red color which the well drillers said was iron. They set us up with a filter system and the water went back to normal.

Now however, we are starting to notice a blue-green tint staining our shower. Is this copper, a different form of iron, or something else? Is it safe? We have a water cooler that we drink from and cook with so it's mostly bathing and dish washing I'm concerned with.

Canadafag here. You seem to know what you're talking about. Hypothetically if I do med school in the UK or Aus and want to match to a psyc program in the USA, how do I select which programs I'd have the best shot at? Are there programs that are IMG friendly? Also if STEP 1 isn't made P/F, worst case scenario, what should I do if I majorly fuck up step 1? Like I know I should be aiming for 230+ but lets say I score a 205 or some horrible score. Is it still salvageable? Psych is all I want. Did my undergrad in it, research experience in a psyc lab, would do lots of rotations in psychiatry if I did go to med school. In other words any PD would be able to tell that I am not choosing psych as a back up because I didn't get into some sort of ultra competitive specialty. I really just like it. What do?

So my mother had some problem last night.
She is a woman in her late 40s with diagnosed anemia and not to long ago she had episode of high (+200) blood pressure that took her to the ER.
After a week she had some tests done on her heart or something and doctors told her she was fine.
She was prescribed some blood pressure medication and she stabilized so she stopped taking the prescribed therapy and now only takes therapy for her anemia.
Fast forward last night at 4AM she wakes up in cold sweat, strong vertigo that increased if she changed her head position, nausea and vomiting.
As soon as she sat on a chair and closed her eyes her symptoms calmed but if she tried to lie down just as she inclined it would start again.
Blood pressure was 140/90.
This morning she was ok and judging from my googling skills Im suspecting BPPV but considering her variable blood pressure history it may be something else.
I told her to make an appointment but she refused.
Please advise.

Just out of curiosity: In western medical schools, at around what time do you start dissecting cadavers and, at what point in medical school did they ask you to identify every muscle in the upper and lower extremities?

I'm legitimately curious because I started studying in my thirdworld shithole's "best" medical school and it's barely a month in and we've already finished identifying and describing the functions of every muscle in the upper and lower extremities. I also failed my anatomy exam. I'm a psych major and I don't know how they expect us to know all of this shit.

1. They’re women
2. They were pressured into medicine
3. They’re brats who have never done a day of “real work” in a labour/construction job or (even worse) an office job and don’t realise how menial and monotonous that life is
4. They have no people management skills and can’t cope with a position of responsibility
5. They have no leadership skills
6. They have no prioritisation skills
7. They are educated beyond their intelligence

Sure, there are people who burn out in a high workload/pressure specialty because it conflicts with their personal commitments etc but then again nobody is holding a gun to their head forcing them to specialise as quickly as possible.

Here I am. You basically do six years, then you start residency. Residency takes from 4 (the lowest) to 6 years depending on spec. Fellowship is usually 1 year in non-surgical specs (Transfusion medicine, peds onc, peds alergology, etc)

Overall, I think it will be pretty easy but you have to nail the hardest subjects (Onc, Cards and Diabetes are the hardest chapters) to make the difference from what I've heard. It can really make the difference between a 900+ score and 850s. (900s always get juciy derm, plastics, cards and GE). Of course, some people even fail the exam (You have to do 500+ to pass it, so anything below 500 results in failure)

If you want a serious response it's week 1 or 2. If you go to a systems based school you finish anatomy over the course of the year. If you're traditional ,you finish it first semester.

Back UE LE is finished within a month in this case.

If you failed, you're not studying hard enough. In USA many or most students start med school without ever taking anatomy. The workload surprises the shit out of almost every student if you go to a decent school that actually teaches rigorously so the students score high on boards, but you're supposed to get used to it. In Europe, there are three ways of getting into med school.
>HS grades: Scandinavia and the Mediterranean region. They also do something similar in the UK but it is a bit different, I am not quite sure how it works.

from the day you start med, if your not in a local gov place (thats call hecs-help)

No matter what you do, the federal gov will not give you access to medicare rebates for 10 years from the day you start med or graduate I can't remember which, I think its graduate.

It does not matter if you become a citzen later.

That means you can be legally qualified as a Dr with the states, no patient can afford to see you because you will be legally barred from the medicare rebate.

www.humanservices.gov.au/organisations/health-professionals/services/medicare/medicare-benefits-health-professionals/eligibility-access-medicare-benefits/overseas-trained-doctors-and-foreign-graduates-eligibility-requirements-medicare

You can make the 10 years shorter if you go rural. However your partner will leave you and you will become a drunk, and get sued as you have no backup, you kids will have no school options there.

The Other factor is getting a local internship. There is already a que for local graduates from private uni's

fuck I don't know desu if many get residency

what I do know is every other year there is a newspaper article with overseas grads protesting they do not have internships ..... it seems some how some do get internships .... but the whole system is so atomised even the degree, you get rotated around until your head spins in 3rd and 4th year, just understanding the million assignments and timetables locations is probably as hard as the logic section on the MCAT.

I think a few must, but a large number are sitting USMLE to the extent that Syd uni knows this and cuts them some slack to do that. So they just scrape by in the local exams, but study their ass of for USLME.

I don't know how they do it. I mean its 100K a year when you include cost of living.

Usyd us a bit of a mafia/management cluster fuck inmho.

They get a high rating because very very smart people compete to get in. the top 50~100/100000

or some such, so thats why they do well.

The actual faculty just collects $$$$ and does near fuck all.

most of the lectures are from the top of their field and doing it for free because of the love teaching or CPD points.

So the uni collects the fees and get to pay almost nothing to many lectures.

Most of the lectures are excellent as in, I have compared them to youtube ones Khan etc and generally the USYD ones leave them for dead.

Anat is pretty good, and path, hist not so much.

Clinically if you get one of the large hospitals your good.

That all said internship is going to be fucking hard.

I am 3/4 medfag, and fuck me its hard going I am hoping I have not failed last weeks exams, surg med, pysch and gp.

The uni does not give a fuck about your internship because they have your money and its a state/federal issue and they put a big fat disclaimer on that b4 you start.

There's not much political sympathy as all the locals know how hard it is to get in, and 50% of the are bonded somehow or pay out their degree

The fed gov actively stops locals from getting training places later to cut down on medicare payouts. This lets them say full medicare for everyone but means the quota it by limiting doctor numbers.

its a real shit show desu

The only thing is .... I think a break point will come where the gov rebate is so small you will be able to practice without a provider number .... but that's about 15~20 years off.

Now what you could do is be a dentist, the feds nor the state have no funding for dentist via medicare or near zero.

So once you finish...on that day, you can go a get a private job. Your done.

In Fact dentistry is like doing your specialty straight out ... and really a much better choice desu....no gov bullshit, no internship needed.

For the last couple months I've seen flashes of light in the corner of my eye. Even in darkness with my eyes closed. Some days the vision is very blurry, other days clear. Eye drops make no difference. When I wake up and lightly rub my eyes like normal the right eye is fine but it causes pain any time I rub the left eye, a pain like pins or needles pricking the eye on the inside of the socket around the top or back of the eyeball. There is now a persistent discomfort in the eye and sometimes minor pains that come and go quickly. I had untreated hypertension for years and I've been on 40mg lisinopril for it for the last couple years. I fear I'm having either gradual retinal detachment or maybe glaucoma which is more frightening. I have a doctor appointment in 4 days to finally find out what's going on but 4 days feels like an eternity with how much this worrying about my eye dominates my thoughts.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I need help.
For the last 4 years I have been struggling with a number of thing. Chronic fatigue, going to the bathroom 5+ times before being able to sleep, erectile dysfunction, and what often feels like a weight on my chest. I've been to a urologist that gave me surgery that removed scar tissue from the inside of my penis and it turns out that that wasn't the issue at all. Wasted money and time. Second time I went to a urologist and they checked my heart saying a I had an irregular heartbeat and sent me to get an EKG (which came back fine) and two other tests which I didn't have the money for.
My family encourages me to go to the emergency room but they don't know about the ED part and the last time I went to the emergency room they just told me that going to the bathroom often wasn't an emergency and that I'm just to anxious to get an erection. (for 4 years? even when I'm by myself? I call BS).
I'm not sure what to do. I need some direction.

Today in peds I had this 16 y/o girl. BMI = 27,14, considered grade 1 obesity, diabetes 1 and hypothyroidism. She takes her meds regularly from what she told me, but the lie I found was when I told the Prof she's on a 110g carbs diet and takes 70 units of insulin pumped, not injected and goes to the gym regularly. The Prof laughed it off, told me she is a patient that lies a lot but I could've found the lie easily if I paid more attention. Asked how and she told me "well, she uses the insulin pump a lot, there are signs of insulin resistance, but keep in mind she told you that she only eats 110g of carbs a day. Someone of her weight would be dragging herself on the floor because of the hunger"

Literally the shittiest job wiping and washing people all day. You are expected to manage a patient load of potentially up to 20 people on your own depending on the shift and type of unit you work on. General medicine, surgery and geriatric units are the worst. You can work part-time to study on the side, but due to high turnover of the job expect to be called in to work nearly every day to replace the "sick" calls.
It's back breaking considering you'll sometimes have to work with the demented, overweight 90 year old by yourself. And despite help you'll get from CNA co-workers, less and less nurses will be there to help you out since their union is fighting to have less roles of the CNA pushed onto the RN.
There's a huge recruitment drive going on in my hospital to train and hire more CNAs, but until safe patient-staff ratios are implemented, people will continue to leave the job due to burnout, due to injury as a result of physical wear-and-tear or violence from patients. It's not a job I would recommend, but then again I'm not a CNA or even a RN, but a PA. I hear the complaints and see how bad it is though. Do you know what type of unit they are trying to get you hired on?

way too hard for no good reason. I think basic medical care should be taught in school as a required class. All of a sudden this whole generation of kids could help their friends and family members with the most basic shit and way less people would visit the hospital over little stuff.

Of course, they wouldn't know everything and you'd still want to go to the hospital, but it would make healthcare cheaper and those who wish to become doctors would already be partially the way there.

Symptom: Foot vibrations. Feels like a cellphone is going off in my foot.

It's not Diabetes and that foot nerve degeneration, I am not prediabetic or diabetic.
Doctor had me get catscanned on my leg, no vein/nerve issues.
For awhile being on a multivitamin with B12 and iron solved it. It went away since May until all of a sudden last night. I don't know if it's around all the time or not, but I feel it most acutely when I try to sleep or it's close to bedtime like right now. Around the day I don't feel it even though I am often sitting.

I do have a fatty liver, I forget my blood pressure but I think it's a bit high (Not on any medicine for that, only medicine is thyroid 50mg of something). So I assume it's either nerve related due to iron or B12 deficiency (I know I was just on the edge of enough B12 last bloodwork) or it's blood pressure related.

I’m not an optho but I had always worn glasses and also had slight astigmatism, but my vision sounds slightly worse than yours. I got LASIK 6 years ago and still have 20/20 vision. Just go in for the consultation. It takes several hours and they do every test in the book. It’s worth doing and the surgery itself takes less than 30 minutes. They corrected my astigmatism and I haven’t had any side effects like dry eye. I go in once a year or so to check my vision and so far haven’t needed any corrections.
