In order for the Death Star to destroy Alderaan in the way depicted, it would have to put out energy roughly equivalent to that given off by earth's sun over the course of several minutes. In point of fact, a much smaller energy blast would have scalded the planet's surface into lava that would take decades to cool and solidify, which would have let the death star fire more quickly.

Perhaps it detonated all the planet's fissile material, deep within its interior.

That must have been a hell of a lot of "fissile material".

The Death Star was just to scare people. A gigantic explosion is much more impressive than just melting.

More rapid fire? Don't get me wrong, it was cool and it was just a movie, but it bugs me just a little.

who were they scaring? everyone on the planet died.... and anyone on another planet wouldn't have seen it for years (assuming the nearest life sustaining planet was light years away)

The people in Star Wars had some form of superluminal communication so your point is invalid.
