Throughout the entirety of human history, we have survived as a species by observing various natural phenomena around us. For example, if an animal takes a shit on a certain plot of land, plants grow on that plot of land, some of which are edible. Or if you see birds over a random patch in the ocean, it is highly likely that they are above a school of fish, which can be caught and fed upon.

I'm not an anthropologist or a historian, but I'm willing to bet in took a good bit of time to figure that shit out, that's why early humans were scavengers according to those who study ancient history or whatever. So it took a quite a bit of time to gather and interpret the data.

These days people just give up data for free without even thinking about it. 7/10 people will give a grocery store clerk their phone number if asked without questioning it (though that is changing a bit). It's like the birds saying, "hey come eat my fuckin fish yo, you seem cool and I trust that you won't try to eat me since I told you about this food source".

So at the end of the day, if you can understand and apply probability theory, decision theory, and ACTUAL mathematical statistics (i.e. not statistics for <insert various major> which is watered down as fuck) to modeling human behavior while not being completely autistic, then I can definitely see how a soft scientist could excel in this field. Humans aren't that hard to predict, however you have to have interacted with enough of them to make sense of the data.
