I do not understand why it needs to be connected to the internet.
Just load up all relevant data into it (all of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, history, music, art, etc) and plug it in and you get all the benefits without any of the risks.
Want to download new data? Just scroll a tablet or computer screen really fast and have your enhanced eyeballs be able to absorb the information.
Why does it need to be connected to the internet?

It's not it being hackable that makes it stupid. It's stupid in that it's just 1000 wires in your brain that do nothing but measure neuronal activity inaccurately. Saying that this is the first step toward a BCI is like saying the invention of the wheel was the first step toward the Mercedes. It might technically be true but don't go thinking we're all getting German cars because Grug made a circular rock.

if proven safe it could improve your
quality of life if you are paralyzed. Right now they are just targeting a specific motor of the brain to control a mouse cursor, which is something that has already been done:
https://www.medgadget.com/2018/01/brain-computer-interface-lets-users-learn-move-cursor-seconds.html
This is really the minimum viable application for this thing. It could be possible to control a robotic limb with this device, but it's also possible that control of a whole body might require more bandwidth and a larger interface. Second, there is not a snowball's chance in hell that anyone who's not paralyzed is going to be able to get one in less than 5 years time. As of right now, 'cosmetic' brain surgery is not a thing. Neuralink will need to show that these devices are very safe before the FDA will even consider regular people getting them. I am going to try to say this next statement in as careful a way as possible. There is the potential that neural interfaces could enable us to use computers more effectively. I am trying to be as cautious as possible about saying this because this is speculation, but this could mean offloading some of the processing to the computer so that one might be able to hold more things in their head or potentially even use software to understand complicated math. But we are not there yet. Although I will admit that connecting the damn thing to a bluetooth enabled smartphone is pretty silly.
>>10893325
see the link above, right now it's good enough that it's possible to control a mouse cursor with a BCI. Having this tech will also make brain research better.

Find the people developing the device. Find CP in their harddrive. Blackmail them into giving you a a device in exchange for you not calling the FBI. Find a qualified MD to implant device. Easy.

it's indirectly connected to the internet. It connects to a smartphone, which probably connects to the internet.
>>load up all relevant data into it
anon, neuralink is not currently downloading data into the brain. They are targeting a specific motor area so that one can control a mouse and potentially even a keyboard with it. We aren't able to download data into the brain yet, nor do we know how to do so, but we can control a mouse with a BCI. There is the possibility we might be able to do something similar to this, but there is also the possibility that it won't be possible. Right now there are limitations to this technique. It will be difficult to implant the electrodes deep into the brain and the implanting process could very well damage neurons. If the part we need to access to 'download information into the brain' is to deep, then we can't do it. Also because we slightly damage the brain perhaps the area of the brain we have to implant it into could cause drastic changes to ones personality or memories.
>>10893667
it's better to be tetraplegic than can shitpost than one who can't. I mean just imagine if Stephen Hawking could have typed as fast as a regular person...
>>10893805
It can't be implanted without a robot. You'd also have to blackmail them pretty hard because them implanting the device would still get them in pretty big trouble with the FDA. The whole company would be endangered by them doing that.
>>10893427
>>10893414
Anon it's just a way to control a mouse right now. And even if we find a way to offload processing to a computer it's possible that we won't be able to understand said thoughts. For example, we can run 'neural' networks on the computer, but it is a big challenge to figure out what exactly they're doing.
