Weightlifting and body training is really only important if you are unhealthy. Fixating on getting a toned or muscular body such that it is a lifestyle takes away from your ability to grow intellectually and creatively. Unless you are sufficiently developed in those other areas you have fallen victim to a trap. The types of people who fall into this trap of body obsession are extremely dull in my experience, lacking in creativity and depth.

... Why, even in the process of thinking, in which the use of the body seems to be reduced to a minimum, it is matter of common knowledge that grave mistakes may often be traced to bad health. And because the body is in a bad condition, loss of memory, depression, discontent, insanity often assail the mind so violently as to drive whatever knowledge it contains clean out of it. But a sound and healthy body is a strong protection to a man, and at least there is no danger then of such a calamity happening to him through physical weakness: on the contrary, it is likely that his sound condition will serve to produce effects the opposite of those that arise from bad condition. And surely a man of sense would submit to anything to obtain the effects that are the opposite of those mentioned in my list.

Besides, it is a disgrace to grow old through sheer carelessness before seeing what manner of man you may become by developing your bodily strength and beauty to their highest limit. But you cannot see that, if you are careless; for it will not come of its own accord.

They probably enjoy the feeling of getting stronger, the endorphins and general atmosphere of working out. Repetitive, progressive development of one's body is quite rewarding given a certain predisposition. There are also benefits to joint health, longevity, lower risk of heart disease and obesity. Many people who lift also do cardio, play intramural sports, mountain bike, snowboard etc. So, its not so much usually about what people assume it to be about though of course many people do just want to get pussy, and lifting will not fix an ugly face and poor socialization growing up.

If this is meant to be a beginner routine then there are two things I get from this: 1) either you are doing too much weight for the prescribed sets and reps, or 2) you have been doing this routine for a long time and need to adjust. Which one of the two it is depends on the time spent in your beginner routine (which I am assuming is what you are doing).

>I sometimes add some alternative exercises like OHP, lat pulldowns, pull-ups, curls, rows, but they are not as important as the big 3
Not as important but they definitely help keep balance in your growth and should be done if possible. A good way to do this is to get in 3-5 sets of 8-10 reps for the assistance exercises at a medium weight. You'd be surprised at how adding assistance can actually improve the big 3 if done properly. Of course, the big 3 neglect certain areas such as upper back and arms so you will want to add in exercises for those anyways.

Is your diet and sleep sorted out as well?

>> No.10887837

>>10887799
I've been following this routine for years, with slight adjustments, but I've still not even reached 1/2/3/4 for a 1rm
I started with extremely low weights (the bar) and tried to progress half the pace prescribe by crazy guides like SS, but I still end up stalling, and now that I'm on it for years, I've gotten to my genetic potential, which is probably around the low 90kg bench press for a 1rm after 3 years. Physically I look the same as day 1. Only neural improvement leading to slight strength gains. No muscle added at all. I can't add any weight at all to my lifts without failing, neural connection to muscles is maxed out. I need hypertrophy now to progress, which I can't induce

Yeah, I forgot to state that for accessories I mostly train in the 8-10 reps range

Diet should be good enough, 500kcal surplus when I'm not too fat, with at least 1.5g/kg, I tried going up to 3g/kg but it doesn't change anything except hurting myself so I fixed it back to 1.5-2 max.

Sleep is variable, usually between 6-8 hours a night. It's not like I can live with 3hours sleep a night, or afford more than 8 hours a night since I need to do other things than lifting too

>> No.10887862

>>10887837
Yea sounds like you need to readjust that routine then. For now, I would add in something simple that I found helps: extra volume. Keep doing what you normally do as a workout but at the end of your work set for the big 3, do 3-5 sets of your final warm up weight.

Say your routine was the following for your bench,
Warmup - bar, 10 reps
Warmup - bar, 10 reps
Warmup - 50 kg, 5 reps
Warmup - 50 kg, 5 reps
Warmup - 60 kg, 5 reps
Warmup - 70 kg, 5 reps

Work set - 3x5 at 80 kg

So you've done your warm up and your work set. Once you finish you workset, do 3-5 sets of 5 reps using the weight of the last warm up set, i.e. 70 kg in my example. The extra volume, even at a lower weight, will help you provided everything else is sorted out. I recommend taking a day in which you figure out your 5 rep training max (the weight at which you can do 5 reps and still have 1 or 2 reps left in the tank), take off 10% from that weight, and use that as your new work set weight.

i either workout early in the morning (when im training lighter) or late at night. when im planning to lift heavy, i would usually do it later in the day. need that mental energy for studying physics n maths stuff.

switched from of a powerlifting style training to a more bodybuilding style training. least the workouts are shorter.

i lift 4x times a week now (kind of like a upper/lower split). used to do fullbody and combined with resting for long periods of time for squatting/benching and doing accessories afterwards cut it in too much.

These are people who think lifting weights is a substitute for developing intelligence. They fell into the trap of the mundane physical because it was easy and intuitive. They did not develop their minds first so that they could achieve a balance.
Ask yourself: that typical bodybuilder over at the gym. Is he an intellectual? Generally speaking he us not, because his energy was spent developing the wrong muscle. You are very obviously insecure from this and your prior list of reasons to workout. You are a beta, not an alpha. You will always remain a beta no matter how you look until you strengthen your mind.

As a teenager I used to go out into the woods at 2pm and not come back until noon the next day. For a period of my life I walked everywhere, which was as much as 40 miles in a day.

My spine is a fucked up now and I'm not really in shape, though I haven't gained any weight. Those were better times and I'd like to return in some way.

Likewise there was a period where I programmed for like 3 weeks straight. I would see the sun rise out the window, I'd see the light change a few times, then it would be dark. When I got tired I would lay down on the floor. When I woke up, I would program again. I don't really have that endurance and ability to focus down anymore.

Not that anon but these are some pitifully weak points.
>What if you need to punch some fucker out who smacked your girl's ass?
Never in my life am I going to want to do this, my gf can take her bruised ego over me facing an assault charge
>What if you need to defend the life of yourself and loved ones when a nigger/methed-out cracker breaks into your house?
Stop living in shitholes, lock your door, and if you really feel its necessary buy a weapon or an alarm
>What if you want to fuck somebody attractive
Attraction is subjective
>What if you want to feel good about yourself?
Self worth is subjective

an intellectual according to what metric?
a lot of typical bodybuilders aren't actually bodybuilders, but simple people who are chasing vanity.
People who are the best bodybuilders, at least according to whom I consider are the best, deconstruct it into a science.
Frank Zane, Bob Paris, Dorian Yates, Arnold Schwarzenegger. All of these people treated bodybuilding like a science and it is a science, there are many complex factors to consider when trying to maximize performance or results from training. Watch Dr. Mike Israetel or read Tudor Bompa's book on Periodization.
If you're going to ignore the effect the body has on the mind, then you're a fool. this:
https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Henning_Budde/publication/5249968_Acute_coordinative_exercise_improves_attentional_performance_in_adolescents/links/59ea1c76aca272cddddb7504/Acute-coordinative-exercise-improves-attentional-performance-in-adolescents.pdf
>"Compelling support for the view that acute aerobic exercise can facilitate cognitive functioning is provided by empirical data on adults reviewed by Tomporowski [24]. He stated that submaximal aerobic exercise performed for periods up to 60 min facilitates specific aspects of information pro- cessing. Accordingly, findings by Hillman and co-workers [12] imply that acute bouts of cardiovascular exercise may enhance the allo- cation of attentional and memory resources, and hence, benefit executive control function in undergraduates."
is just one of many studies that shows how just a 1/24th of your day can positively affect the way you can preform in tackling those "myriad [of] difficult and complex topics"
It's much more complicated than saying "oh why waste time doing this thing when I can do other things which have the potential to help me more"
There's a benefit to doing exercise, it can help with intellectual pursuits and that benefit could very well make up for the time you invested by improving your ability to acquire and retain information.

Now anyone can warrant that this ought to be a sensitive topic. Most are aware of the classic nerd fable that strength is inverse to intelligence. It will soon become apparent to you, that an individual competent in one domain, is likely to be competent in another.

> it's clear you guys are smart
I would dispute that for most of the people on here, but either way, yes I have a high opinion of staying fit and strong. Trying to downplay the value of being physically healthy and exercising is as much of a cope as trying to downplay the value of having good grades and studying. You don't need either to live your life, but only if you are happy in mediocrity.

I have been an avid climber for a good 10 years now, and train (properly structured training, rather than just fucking around at the wall) 5 times a week. Apart from the physical benefits, it has immesurable psychological ones, since it relieves stress which builds up from Ph.D life. It's the only other thing I do other than my work, so I feel like there is a good balance there. I owe a great deal to it as my major method of stress relief.

i found that after i sculpted an amazing body in my teens and early twenties i have to do just a fraction of the effort to maintain it. Like i cant overeat or i will lose definition.

But i would say i only have to exercise half as much now and i keep all the strength and appearance.

The cardio definetly declines without extensive use, but lift power, not much. so yeah, i look chisseled af, took years of dedication but now at 34 i only have to work out 5 times a week 40 (still eat healthy) minutes and i look super cut.

>weightlifting takes away energy that you can use for thinking

LOL psychotic bipolar schizophrenic here. I'm doing 2-4 hours of cardio/strength training everyday. I sleep 4 or 5 hours a day. Assuredly the naturally fucked up creature i am has a lot to do with my energy expenditure and conservation, but if you think rigorous physical activity doesn't promote high energy levels you're fucking retarded.

Bodybuilders aren't stupid because of a deficit in energy on behalf of weight-lifting. They're stupid because who the fuck wants to be smart when girls cream themselves when they see you and manlets put their head down and avert making eye contact with you out of fear/insecurity.

Seriously. Being powerful is a fuck ton more fun than being smart. Being an intuitive/feelings oriented animal is a fuck ton more fun, healthy, and enjoyable than being an analytical intellectually oriented person.

Plus you can get away with a lot more when you're stupid. Honestly, i'd rather be stupid and have free reign to behave generally however i want within reason. People just don't bother with getting upset at stupid animals that don't know no better.

If you always know better, such as in the case of being an intellectual, life is predictable and miserable. Truth be told, there's only 1 place to go once you've gotten to a certain point intellectually, and that is the place of stupid animal. You will build up psychotic pressure over time intellectually analyzing everything. Embracing the animal within is the only way to relieve this pressure. And i personally believe psychotic is just another word for animalistic.
