Let's say we can make a nuclear fusion reactor that is not insanely oversized, is not terribly expensive to build, produces low levels of neutrons, and doesn't require any tritium. And it can add power to a grid at about 4 cents per kilowatt hour, which about half the price of the cheapest overall electricity rate in the USA, and will likely decrease further over time.

Even with this near ideal reactor, how bad do you think the political pushback would be against them? I could see solar and wind power providers joining up with natural gas/peteroleum/coal operators to push out Chernobyl-style propaganda against the tech, even though it's literally impossible for a meltdown to happen, or pointing out that it will produce some nuclear waste, albeit in very low amounts that could be stored on-site for a few centuries before degrading into being harmless.

We all know that the NIMBY types won't pay attention to the difference between fusion and fission-they gathered outside of ITER when it was being first setup in France and act ike the word "nuclear" is a slur. I fear human ignorance will slow adoption of a technology that ould easily solve climate issues and give is cheap reliable power forever.

Can’t wait for suitcase nukes, keep developing nuclear tech, it’s gonna bring anarchy heeeeee, I guess I’ll move away somewhere when that startsbhappen8n

Those are fission devices, dumbass. You can't fit a fusion secondary in a device that size.

Well, to be clear, fission npp can't explode like nukes. Fission could have been used already in a much better way but governments can only think "muh plutonium". The political pushback will be almost negligible when this planets starts becoming literally inhabitable, which will be too late. Dunno before, maybe something to knock some sense into people is needed, but what

>fusion for power is solved
Fusion for power is solved, it is insanely oversized, for free, far enough away to be absolutely safe for us, we don't need to add any fuel for billions of years.
Solar panels can harvest this energy and add power to a grid at about 3 cents per kilowatt hour. It is absolutely certain to decrease even further over the next few years.

Not any worse than the pushback old cell phone makers made against iPhones and smartphones. Sure many would bitch and scream, but that's it.

I can see NIMBY & BANANA groups making it a problem to build these in Western Countries, but China certainty wouldn't give a damn, and would certainly start building them for both their domestic use, and offer "loans" to third world countries to build & maintain them, much like they are doing with their coal power plants in Africa right now. India, Indonesia, Pakistan, ect would also probably want to build them and not let politics (aside from their usual corruption issues) get in the way.

China would also probably start setting up synthetic fuel plants; 4 cents kw/hr electricty lets you make synthetic fuel that isn't much more expensive than regular dinojuice, and right now China's biggest strategic weakness is their reliance on imported oil. And the Chinese government seems to actually want to make China more powerful, rather than the leadership of many western countries that are willing to cuck their nation for ideology and/or personal gain.

Actually 3 cent per kilowatt hour is the average long term value for utility scale photovoltaic power in the US. Only wind and existing hydro-power can compete.
