10862371 No.10862371 [Reply] [Original]

Is it possible to learn calculus in 10 days? Not ALL of calculus or super advanced stuff, but enough to pass the calculus CLEP. Right now I'm working on Khan Academy (I've finished 2 units) and I'm looking into some MIT open courseware stuff.

Here's the thing, my senior year of hs starts in 10 days (turned 18 this summer dont worry), I'm marked down to take precal but I don't want to. I want to take the calculus CLEP and hopefully with that I can pass it as credit by exam.

I'm afraid I'm wasting my time with Khan academy but the CLEP website has it listed as good online study material.

Preparing for the calculus CLEP in 10 days. Is it do-able?

If you could learn 10 concepts in 10 days, then you might have a chance. In my experience, to learn even a single concept takes at least a week or two, but I'm a brainlet, so what do I know.

the explanations on pauls online are concise but the questions almost always play out totally different than actual calc tests and require miscellaneous knowledge. do pauls online to learn, then khanacademy or clep training questions to practice

I took the AP calculus exam this year, which is also a calculus 1 exam given by the college board where you can earn college credit. I have no idea how they compare in difficulty, but most of the other students in my class thought the AP exam was difficult despite spending 9 months learning Calculus, so keep that in mind. I'd say you should wait until at least 2 months of studying to take it

9 days left. Yesterday i learned about the basic rules of derivatives. I just learned about the chain rule. I already know about limits and countinuity but I learnt that before I started counting down the 10 days.

Did you really do no homework and never study at all? My guess is you actually did a little bit of hw, and studied a little bit. I bet you also went to class. There is a difference between seeing something for the first time and learning it in a few days and cramming for a final.

>> No.10870007

I don't know how the CLEP or any of that american stuff work, but it will all come down to how rigorous the test is. Also, taking a test takes more than just understanding the concepts and equations, since you have to do lots of exercises to get good at problem solving. If you're a quick learner, already understand everything that leads up to Calculus, have a good attention span, and can handle some stress, you can probably do it.

>> No.10870028

During my junior year, i decided to take the AP calc BC test (which is calc 1 and 2, i think your clep is just calc 1). I decided last minute so i only got to study for about a month. I got a five and my calc skills are still just as good as anyone else’s. I only used an ap calc bc practice book, mit ocw, and i think some other textbook. I took about half of precalc (was a shit class anyway tho so it didnt help) and i was good at trig, which ive seen other people mentioning. Ive also always been pretty good at math and standardized tests and shit, so idk how your confidence is in those areas (if youre doing the clep like this, youre probably not too bad). But yeah i totally believe in you, i think it’s pretty possible. Khan academy is good, mit ocw is good, maybe buy a clep calc practice book or take a practice exam if those exist, so you can get a feel for what to expect and how well you have to do
