What does /sci/ think about pop-sci, is it good for actuall science or will it just make people have the wrong impresion of what stem (mostly physics) is about?

No. It's amateur hour. Not interested.

>have science education
>be at family dinner
>someone present had seen something on IFLS or other popsci wasteland and feels enlightened
>feel they are now as knowledge on me because they watched a 1 minute quantum mechanics youtube cartoon
>"explain to me how its possible that an electron can go through two holes at the same time, you scientists are just making up shit as you go along"

i could do without popsci. plebs should stick to monster truck rallies. if you want to learn science do it properly.

its okay as long as it doesnt turn people into pseudo intellectuals

>> No.10861725

It's fine, generally, as it gets more people into science and presents the results of scientific research to those who made it possible.

But as >>10861614 said, laypeople need to remember that all they get from pop-science is a pre-digested form of the actual scientific results.
Basically, it only gives them a stepping stone for futher enquiry and study.

*further enquiry and study that most likely will still be in the scope of already existing knowledge.

The absolute cope of inherently and utterly unfalsifiable upper theoretical physics (simulation theory, multiverse with different valued constants, and other gayness) is driven by a deep spite of Christian metaphysics.

>worst minds
Dawkins had some, SOME, good ideas regarding gene-based selection and presented them in an okay way.

>> No.10864666

It's just a political tool used to influence the 100~120 group on key issues.

- It tends to be nostalgic in the sense that it brings up memories of science class and TV shows in grade school and high school.
- Used to falsify some moral arguments
- Subliminally strengthens arguments which are supported by sketchy evidence by invoking names of famous pop "scientists" like Michio Kaku, and and Bill Nye.
