I was speaking with my friend and he said brushing your teeth actually damages them
of course I personally don't believe him because he also thinks vaccines cause autism (although his kids are vaccined, he says autism is better than death) but I wanted to know your opinion on it because it isn't the first time I hear this

Rubbing something on something will always cause some wear, will it ever amount to something noticeable? Probably not unless you brushed them all day everyday for more than a lifetime. Not brushing them and letting the bacteria go to town rotting them will cause exponentially more damage though.

>> No.10833686

It's bullshit.
But also Feynman was vaguely skeptical of brushing your teeth daily. But Feynman is also completely overrated in general.

Yes, Dentist know it, usually give you right way bushing and soft toothbrush recommendations, but chemistry(coke soda, gatorade, acids(lemons, orange), coffee) and bateria damage are way way worst and quickly over brushing damage.

Herbivores starve to death because their teeth rot out of their heads. I'm gonna bursh my teeth with some basic non whitening toothpaste and a simple brush and floss.

if you scrape the corrosion off of metal, is that damaging it? the point is to rub off the layer of crap on your teeth but not so much you rub away the enamel

Needing to brush your teeth daily is a lie. I only brush my teeth once a week and I'm totally fine. I've never kissed a girl, my teeth are as yellow as butter and my breath smells like fresh horse shit, but I I'm doing okay. And don't get me started on flossing.

Most likely, he went to the dentist who told him that he was brushing too hard or over-brushing which can damage your teeth, but he wrongly interpreted it that way. That’s probably what your hearing: dentists telling people to quit brushing too hard/over-brushing

The enamel is weaker/softer for about half an hour after eating something acid or sweet*.
Don't brush your teeth during that time.
After 30min the spit in your mouth has normalized the situation and it is safe to brush.

*the sweet doesn't hurt your teeth directly, the bacteria on your teeth eat it up and crap out acid which then does the damage

I definitely over brush
>floss in the morning
>mouthwash
>brush 90 seconds
>second mouthwash

>quick 30 second brush after lunch

>before bed mouthwash
>brush 90 seconds
>second mouthwash

but goddamn if my breath and overall hygiene isn't perfect I die of embarrassment

literally depends on genes
I haven't brushed my teeth once in last 19 years and I'm fine
sure they aren't perfectly white but as long as they work it doesn't matter
my dentist never did anything with them, he says they are alright on every visit and probably thinks I'm brusing them
meanwhile my best friend recently spend more than 1000$ on canal treatment or something like that

Dumb. Brushing teeth = abrasive and removes small deposits of plaques. Once you use toothpaste, minerals are deposited on the tooth for extra layer of protection.

You're meant to use a soft brush and brush in a gentle manner. The process is just to remove plaque, sugar deposits and bacteria from your teeth and it doesn't take a lot of force to do this.

If your diet is as it should be you won't even need to brush your teeth and they'll be strong and clean.

>> No.10838439

It's like washing a car. If you scrub too hard you'll scratch it. If you wash it too often, you'll fuck up the paint and clear coat eventually. If you drive through mud a lot and leave it dirty, it will rust.

Just like teeth. Keep them clean, but don't overbrush them to wear the enamel. Eat less sugar and less acids.

that's just not true.
Tooth enamel has a hardness of 5 on the Mohs scale. Anything below that cannot scratch enamel, including gypsum, calcite, fluorite and steel (you can still chip your teeth though).

However what can happen is you soften the enamel with acidic foods, making it more scratchable when you brush your teeth too fast after eating

If you eat processed sugar of any kind, drink juice or soda, and don't ever get checked up by a dentist, then prepare for some painful infections, ulcers, and possibly sepsis. Dental pain is supposed to be one of the most painful pains.
