They clamp our umbilical cords before the completion of placental transfusion. This causes hypoxic brain damage, and via lowered ferritin, leaves the infant more susceptible to free radical damage. One of ferritin's major roles is to manage free iron, and thus fenton reaction mediated autoxidation. H2O2 in the presence of free iron can rapidly become hydroxyl radical via this mechanism. Lowered ferritin is no small thing.

How will the USMLE step 1 being made P/F impact IMG's? I am a Canadian who is planning on either going to the MD program at the University of Sydney Australia or University of Queensland and I wanted to match to the USA for either psychiatry or family med. But with this new proposition of making Step 1 pass/fail I don't know how my application would be impacted. Some people say this is going to be worse for IMG's and DO's. Is it true?

Low intensity non-ionizing radiation is cancer causing by a number of mechanisms, but that's just the beginning of it. Telecom deliberately propped up "cell phones cause cancer, or do they?!?!?" in the mid 90's because they believed cancer epidemiology and the whole layout of the matter would allow them to hold this key position long enough to proliferate like a cancer themselves. With the 1996 telecommunications act, they sealed the deal.

So cancers, yes. But also sterility, brain damage, a massive spike in neurodegenerative diseases, hormonal problems. Essentially if there is a consciousness behind this, what they're doing is thinning us out and wearing us down on all fronts. What's that old saying "physician, heal thyself." Soon.

What's actually physically happening with muscular pain that results from a fractured vertebra, and can it be mitigated if the nerves are all fine?
I've had an L1 anterior wedge fracture since last year and I only really have issues in two places, I'm not sure what's actually going on though.
>upper/middle back, between shoulderblades/opposite sternum area, the muscles get really tight and sore, especially after wearing a backpack for a while
>lower back, above pelvis - feels either like it's aching/throbbing or just generally warm (feels more like a circulation issue as it feels like something is moving around, but sensitivity isn't affected and the skin remains a normal colour)
Is there anything to worry about here/can I do anything to work on it? I'm still only 21 and I've been discouraged from surgery by a DO on here

Why are they doing this? I don't think it is fair for the generations of students that came before and had to study their asses off to get the specialty they want or to even get a specialty. Honestly, does anyone think making shit pass/fail is really helpful in the long run. My school is all p/f now and they removed ranking. This was all after my first year. I don't think it helped me be any more motivated to do my best. Not to mention 194 is passing. Many people will literally just cling to the lowest common denominator to pass. Sure, there will be those who sincerely want to learn medicine and the prospect of actually helping their patients should be enough motivation for a lot of people but I'm not sure about most.

Because step 1 was never intended to be used as a ranking metric for residency applications. It was designed to test minimum expected knowledge of basic sciences for licensure. But now it's being misused by residency PDs, which has led to the current situation where med students spend all their time memorizing trivia to score well on a test with little to no correlation to clinical proficiency instead of actually attending medical school and learning to practice medicine. It's also absurd to assume that a single test taken on a single day can accurately assess your knowledge of 2+ years worth of med school content, especially when retake aren't allowed and rescheduling the exam because of illness or other unexpected issues is expensive and complicated. The point of making step 1 P/F is to make the test what it's supposed to be, a hurdle to licensure, and force PDs to find a less idiotic way of ranking candidates.

I think switching to P/F would be a good thing in the long run. Step 1 has become far too important and is a hindrance to medical education. It would cause a lot of problems in the short term though. Obviously DOs and IMGs will be left out, but MDs from state schools without grades or ranking will also probably be shut out of most competitive residencies. PDs aren't known for their wisdom, so it would probably all just revert to institutional reputation. The best thing would be for all med schools to start grading and ranking students again, and to add a numerically scored test specifically designed to test skills that are relevant to residency/clinical performance.

You are what's wrong with modern medicine. Why should someone who is 75 years old with bilateral lung masses get a biopsy, much less any kind of treatment? They're either benign and it doesn't matter or they're malignant and the prognosis is very poor regardless of the type of cancer. At best, treatment could prolong his life by six months or so, but he'd probably be too sick to do anything during that time. It's perfectly reasonable for him to decided to live out the rest of his life naturally rather than letting you torture him with radiation and chemo for a few months before he dies from the cancer anyway. And if he's not going to get treatment, there's certainly no reason to accept the pain and risk associated with a lung biopsy.

But to be serious, some people are more neurotic, that's just life. For things to do, the usual eat/sleep/exercise. For many anxious people more exposure tends to help in the long run. If there are some completely useless things you are worrying about, just cut them out of your life. Emphasis on the completely useless, retreating to your comfort zone is rarely useful.

i mean there are limited number of things that can go south during routine procedures and they are all fixable so there is no place for fear.

unless the pulp of the tooth is affected or something more serious is taking place the pain felt should not require anesthetic.

For the past month I've been getting random dermatitis breakouts that are itchy as hell, most are on my extremities but I have no idea (sort of) what's causing it. The only thing I can see is my allergy to tetracyclines that once left me with an all over body itch (but with no noticeable localized break outs) when I took Arestin for acne like 10 years ago. I've started working in a pharma company in R&D a project involving tetracyclines though I make a point to try to not let it touch my skin directly (though I'm sure it happens every now and then). Could this be the cause of my itching? I'm on a fellowship so I'll be done working with it within the next month.

Hey, need some advice here.

The problem is, that when I walk I sometimes get pain in my groin and a bit down towards my left ball. It's very odd since I don't always feel it. For example yesterday morning it was sharp. Then I spent the whole day at home in my bed and I hadn't felt anything. In the evening though I went for a 30 minute walk and towards the end I felt it again. It's painful only when I'm putting my weight on my left foot. Today however I had ti go out for longer and while I felt it a bit again it was very mild. It has been this way for about 2 or 3 weeks now and I thought it was healed because last week I hadn't noticed it. My initial suggestion was that I probably injured myself somehow while doing sports, because I also had a inflammation of my left knee joint a couple of years ago that would behave similarly, but I'm not so sure anymore. Any ideas?

Fair enough. It definitely has undoubtedly become that though. Certain specialties won't even look at your application if it's less than 240.
It will be a difficult transition and one can argue it doesn't even matter since they will eventually find some other nee metric anyway. Like step 2 and if that doesn't work, then certain programs will start only accepting people from schools who rank.
Also elaborate on the whole lesser known schools and international gradutes being effected. Does this include state schools. I go to a state school(it's been around for a while but still).

IMGs and DOs are fairly obvious. They're already at a significant disadvantage, and without a common metric to compare them to US MD students, programs would have no reason to consider them. If med school reputation and connections become major factors, the most competitive residencies will just automatically go to graduates of top schools. I don't think state school grads will have trouble finding some kind of residency, but they may get locked out of the more competitive specialties like DOs are today.

Literally explain to me right now how sticking a needle inside a persons chest helps resolve a pneumothorax if the reason for the pneumothorax is that the negative pressure in the pleural layer is disrupted because of air getting in. It's always somehow assumed to be self-evident, I don't get it. Is it only for a tension pneumothorax where the air can't get out so making a hole will even it out or something?

A needle thoracostomy doesn't do much for a simple pneumothorax. It's mainly for a tension pneumothorax, where the air in the chest cavity is at greater than atmospheric pressure. Needling the chest won't re-inflate the lung, but it will release the pressure and prevent the pneumothorax from causing death by compressing the heart and contralateral lung. The definitive treatment for a pneumothorax is insertion of a chest drain with a one-way valve. Movement of the lung will gradually pump the air out of the chest through the valve. Small pneumothoracies will usually resolve on their own once the lung injury heals.

One could argue ortho is locked for DOs currently but with the merger, the DO ortho programs will now be part of the unified match which means the MD ortho programs will likely follow suit.

The ones that DO's have trouble getting into are the incredibly specialized things like radiation oncology because there are few or no DO residencies.

That being said, I am a DO and matched to an MD radiology program and I interviewed at 9 MD programs.

By degree of compression, do you mean height loss? It definitely looks >40% to me, which would be grade 3/severe, but I think that system is only used for osteoporotic compression fractures. Need med bros in here to help me out with symptoms I'm experiencing. I swallowed a chicken wing feather July 4th (like 3 inches give or take, maybe a little more actually but I dunno) because it looked like crunchy cartilage in some skin. Anyway it went down my throat and I thought it got lodged because I felt something there. Turned out to be trauma of some sort because I had a bad stomach cramp the next day. For a couple days I had slightly bloody stool, but I *think* it passed, as there were a bunch of red broken up little rod shaped things in my stool on day 2. I also had lightheadedness during this time. Anyway I also had more cramps on the bottom left abd right sides of my abdomen, and slightish chest pain when I would inhale deeply (near gallbladder at first). This is all in the first few days. So cramps eventually went away, and chest pain (after moving to both sides of chest above nipples kinda, mostly on left side) subsided too. I still felt trauma in throat though. Symptoms would come and go over the next week or two (chest sensation when breathing in deeply and minor cramps). Then on like week 2 and a half I had this terrible mid left back pain, couldn't even turn to stretch all the way. Even that went away though. Over the course of like 3 to 3 and a half weeks symptoms would come and then go for a few days completely. I noticed yesterday after riding my bike for maybe 8 miles with some up and downhill that the chest pain (general, mostly on left side, not triggered so much from breathing in deeply though) came back at the force it was at originally, with minor cramps. I think the back pain came on two days after working out arms and doing planks (after not working out for a good month). (continued)

My question I guess is, should I be concerned this hasn't healed up on its own yet? I had a feeling the chicken feather would do some damage on the way through, but now I can't even exercise without being scared of what's happening. Could it be heartburn and esophagus abrasian? Inflamed intestines too? Or is it like nerve pain? I hope it's nothing more serious than that, like a perforation or anything anywhere. Please feel free to make fun of me but also please don't scare me with intentional misdiagnoses, this has made me kinda anxious. I never vomited for what that's worth. Just hope my heart/lungs/etc. are safe and my esophagus/stomach/gut can heel. I've been trying to eat good foods for this and foods for inflammation.

Also it kinda feels like heart burn (I guess, I've never had it before. Feels kinda warm in middle of chest sometimes. Okay that's it thanks and sorry for being a faggot (made a thread for this on accident already not seeing this one)

Not from US but AFAIK, after HS you go into premed which lasts 4 years and only then, if you get accepted, you get into medschool for another 4 years. They basically do 2 more years than EU, at least in my shithole it's 6 years. I don't know how matching into a spec works but during premed you do what we do in the first years like biochem, histology, physio, pathophysiology, etc and in medschool you'd do what we do from the 3rd year on. So we basically have "premed" in the first two years while they do it separately. Pls don't kill me, 'muricans if I'm wrong.

That's basically right, except it's not "premed", it's any bachelors degree. Med school is a graduate program, but it doesn't matter what subject your first degree is in. You do have to take some prerequisite courses before applying to med school, but they don't have to be part of your degree. If you look at admissions statistics, students with engineering and humanities degrees have the highest med school acceptance rates, and biology/health science have the lowest.
