Hoatzin chicks are born with claws on their wings (where the "wrist" is). When a predator approaches, they escape by dropping into the water of the rivers that they perch above. They can then use the claws to crawl along the bottom until they reach the river bank.

HOWEVER, when the chick gets its flight feathers, those claws fall off and it loses it's underwater abilities. There's an uncanny valley between "chick that drops into the water" and "adult that flies away" during which many birds die because they drop into the water and DROWN. This is actually the leading cause of death for that age group (if I remember correctly).

So, yeah, Hoatzin are awesome.
