He was a doctor by trade and then did his own thing. His theories have been heavily revised by now and the verdict is that he was fundamentally wrong on many things, but there was often an element of truth to his ideas. He wasn't completely wrong, but he was "right" for the wrong reasons.

Reminder that a science doesn't depend on the topic studied but merely the use of the scientific method. (Which Freud didn't rely on, that's the point.)
