19-year-old gen Z here. I can guess it's because we know the world is shit. Back in high school the atmosphere around working was pretty grim and competitive, especially since to get any decent job you need thousands of dollars worth of an education and experience. Obviously most people do not have this wealth at such a young age and are forced to go into debt and sacrifice luxuries. It doesn't help there is a constant bias for appropriate behaviour and the slightest mistake can cost you your career. Being raised in such an over-populated, multicultural society damages the cohesion and well-being of that society because each race tends to stick together and divide the country even more. Relationships have been ruined and replaced with hook-up cultures. Most women you see on the street are dressed like hookers and have a tendency to accuse you of rape or harassment at a moment's notice.

So not only do you need to go into great debt to get an education that may or not get you a decent job, you need to compete with numerous other people and be the right race because some companies will not hire you if you're white. And even if you get that job, you're in such a delicate position such that if you say anything rude or be politically incorrect, it could all come tumbling down in an instant and you're back at the start again. It's the ultimate game of snakes and ladders, except that the board keeps getting more cluttered with players and the weather gets hotter and hotter every turn.

At least we have the internet to keep us comfortable and sane... Oh, you're forcing me to leave home and get a job, mum and dad? No thanks, I'd rather die than deal with this world.

You described a very single minded small part of America.

This trend is global and most "problems" you named are confined to the US.

Look I'm in my late 20s and a millenial so It's not like I understand your mindset. However all those things you are saying were true for me as well. Hookup culture was MORE of a thing during my time in the Emo craze. There were no smartphones yet so it was far easier to cheat and people fucked like rabbits.

Social incompetent people were just ostrasized and never heard from again. Nowadays a nerd can just create a social media account, add people and hook up over the web or start conversing with people that way.

Do you realize how easy you have it compared to the past generations. Lots of what Gen Z is complaining about is actually just normal human nature that was always here.

Or do you seriously think this is the only time of SJWs, affirmative action, high university costs, high competition?

When I graduated highschool it was the worst economic crisis in a century and literally everyone told me that there would be no jobs at all and going to uni would be a waste of time. I still went into debt while everyone basically said "yeah you're going to be unemployed". That is way worse for your anxiety and depression than the bullshit zoomers make up nowadays.

You are the most spoiled faggots I've ever experienced. I wonder if the next generation will be even more spoiled and you will be blaming their faggotry just like I am blaming yours.

Scrape yourself off the ground and man up you whiny pussy. Get out there and get a girlfriend. You're sheltered and completely out of touch with reality. I hope you realize that.

Fuck those hacks, they know nothing. They can't possibly know how it is to feel the demons consuming you from inside out and how our mental stability is at the mercy of them, how they constantly change your perception of reality, not in a visual sense, more like making you imagine things that aren't actually happening, like staging an argument you never had with someone, create an image of this person and change the way you feel about him/her based on this argument, and then you actually meet this person irl, only to have your mental vision of this person shattered again and again and again because this shit just keeps happening. Oh, and how it feels to imagine what people might of me and how I'm constantly failing despite my efforts. I can barely function socially anymore, my mind is just one big spectacle of delusions. It's crystal clear to everyone around me, including my mother, that I'm in suffer. My mother instead of actually helping, just keeps asking when I'm getting an internship or a part-time job, this of course destroys me from inside because I'm feeling like a leech (which I am) and she asks me in a way that implies "when will you leave, you parasite?". I keep telling her that I will as soon as my GPA improves because no one will hire me right now. It's either that or drop out and go back to the dead end jobs I was working at. Plus I have severe tinnitus.
I'll probably just fucking end it all in a year or two, this shit just keeps getting worse and worse, it's unbelievable.

Not disclosing my age but I'm an early zoomer. I've been to 4 secondary schools (the one I'm in now is for the psychologically ill) so I think I can speak for quite a few zoomers. Technology is unironically a large part, but a lot of deluded zoomers are so lost in the escapism it provides that they'll deny it and blame it on the older generations supposedly leaving them with "practically nothing" or on "chemical imbalances". The majority of them use the internet at least 9 hours a day minimum and it's been like that since they were kids. The only semblance of ideology they have bringing them together is the rise of anti-feminist culture that grew especially popular around 2017 - they're incredibly influenced by youtubers. There's the odd "all for equality"fag that is influenced by the education system too. The kids in my current school for the psychologically ill especially spend the internet and have almost no hobbies outside of that. The treatment we are provided are therapy (sometimes specialised but it's not much different from regular to be honest) which is pretty much telling said therapist your issues and they listen - thing is, lots of zoomers complain that it doesn't help much but to expect more than for therapists to listen and provide run-of-the-mill advice is idealistic. There isn't any sort of magical answer to having a lack of faith or drive. It's surprisingly easy to get medicine too but it obviously does not help much for the kind of mindset we have. I think we are just lost. Lots of edgy nihilists, as well as lots of overly-ambitious slackers. And this kind of depressed "culture" is probably the only thing that is actually strong among gen z, it gets romanticised a lot via memes even if they try to hide it and say that its a way to cope. No silent sufferers. My mum grew up during soviet times and she recently asked me what we have. Shes not political but she said that at least back when she were a communist, she had something to fight for. We don't.

It's pretty obvious isn't it? It's not any single cause or event, but something first-world societies have been trending towards since the dawn of industrialization. We're growing more and more isolated from each other, we're becoming more seperated from the fruits of our labor, and life in general has become so easy we barely have to try anymore. In short, people are killing themselves because they're bored, existentially bored.

And the less that's required of us going forward, the less reason we'll have to go on living. Perhaps it's some kind of cosmic balancing force to account for overpopulation.

I was born on 98 and I remember very well how out of nowhere smartphones just took over.
I was 14 and one day I was making calls to my friend’s house, sending a text every now and then, and instant messaging on the computer, suddenly all of this was over taken by having instant messaging constantly. None of the other communication channels is overwhelming and anxiety inducing like IM at the tip of your fingers 24h a day. Then there is social media which is a whole different, and way worse, beast.
50 years from now when this stuff gets properly regulated, people will look back at this shit and get shocked how it just ran amok like it was nothing. Sort of like how we look back to when smoking was considered something nice. No wonder kids are killing themselves.

Alright. So I practice a certain sport, and I'm deeply involved in events happening in the city, so I help organize them, help train the kids, cleaning up the club, etc. That's how I'm actually earning some money. This is possible because my coach made it possible. He saw that I love the sport and will do anything to see it flourish in the region, hell I've practically worked for free for almost a year, only now I'm earning some cash. But there's a catch, he's "harsh but fair", but the harsh part is bad, like public humiliation bad. I haven't suffered that yet because I didn't give him a reason to.
OK, back to my delusions. Here's the thing about it: if I'm not constantly fed with "live information" of him and his traits (mainly the good traits) my head starts to create situations where he's antagonizing me, and then I resent him for this. This usually happens when he's out of the state playing some tournaments and have to stay away for a week or two, during this time he asks me to keep things in check in the training center, but it's all in text and he's blunt this way too. My mind makes him the devil, I believe it, and then when we meet again, my view of him shatters yet again.
That's one example, I hope it's enough.

I keep trying to find some magic knowledge or mantra or golden rule or sign to do the work for me, but of course nothing changes. Sometimes I try pretending I'm not retarded anymore but reality and my retardation conspire together and punch me in my very punchable face. I tried blaming my self then I tried blaming the world. But I have not done the work to make a change. This has been going on for fucking yeeeeears. I live Groundhog Day from hell. I keeping not to be retarded but that doesn't work. I think what I got to do if I want to escape this hell is to admit that I'm retarded, accept it, and then make a make navigating the world as the retard that I am. From there, moving forwards, I can work on accomplishing my goals and minimizing my retardedness. Acceptance and hard work or I will be here forever. Thanks again brother.

I used to overthink about other people too. I still overthink but not as much about other people. You need to stop thinking for other people and taking things so personally. Judge people by their actions only. If someone seems unhappy/upset assume it's because of their life outside of you. Don't assume someone else's bad attitude has anything to do with you. Most peoples' affect has to do with something in their lives not related to you. Stop assuming the worse. Focus on action, what they do and what you do. If you are doing the best you can in any given situation then that is all you are responsibly for. If you are always doing the best thing with the given information you have under given circumstances then you have nothing to worry or even thin about. Maybe you make a mistake, maybe there is miscommunication, so what, deal with it and move on. If someone is legitamately being disrespectful then address it like a man, WITHOUT EMOTION, or change your situation. Your brain is running you around because you don't have enough to do and/or you are not getting enough exercise and/or taking care of yourself. Stop thinking for other people. Don't be insecure when you are doing the right thing. Never be a tough guy. Stop being so self absorbed you think everyones' bad attitude is about you. You are much less on other peoples' minds then you think.

This all happened during the plague too. One third of Europe committed suicide at that time, in addition to the third that died from the plague, leaving only one third of the population to carry the torch. It's like we're living through such a time again right now.

That said, we are all going to die eventually anyway. Like, all at once, I mean. What difference does it make if it happens sooner rather than later? None at all.

This is the reason why Shakespeare is one of the most important English philosophers. In his Hamlet, he recognized that suicide is desirable at first glance, but upon closer examination it is actually not certain that suicide culminates in the desired result: eternal peace. It is quite possible that, given the unlikelihood of our existence compared to the infinitude of the dead or at least less aware universe, we might likely wake up anew in the same or another body, the second that we are dead.

I actually don't think there's more successful escapism today. I think there's less. People try to escape, but it's impossible to escape unless there is something to escape from. Our reality is that everything is better than ever. There's nothing to escape from. That's what we really need to escape from. But this is too abstract of an escape for most people. In harder times, people could escape into their duties and hard work. Religion was a big one.

A lack of religion is (sort of) the problem. All depression is at is core existential, and we need coping mechanisms to deal with the existential. However, it's not fair to expect people to deal with their existential fears through organised religions which are clearly fake. Instead there should be a cultural shift towards more spiritual and holistic ways of looking at life and existence. Particularly, we should be looking at ideas like metaphysics to try and understand our existence.

This being said, the modern economy is a massive part of the problem. There are ample resources to ensure that all people can live with a decent quality of life, yet wealth and resources always go to the top. Most people are never able to pursue their interests and dreams because they have to work for their entire lives. Literally waste the life they get making money for people richer than them. It's really fucked up and there's no reason the system has to be that way.

To elaborate, even though no one reads, everyone struggling with this question itt should read Tolstoy's A Confession.

To summarize it for the vast majority who are averse to reading, Tolstoy, an atheist, comes to understand what it is about religion that keeps religious people "going" so to speak. He distills the essence of this down to "hope". Hope is something literally everyone alive needs if they ::hope:: to go on living. Otherwise, they are dead men walking. Literally the smallest negative life event can push them over the edge into self-inflicted death.

I don't know. It was Aristotle who said that slavery would only become obsolete if needles could sew all on their own. (This evokes all the talk of automation, and god willing it will actually happen soon, freeing everyone from Earthly toil, but that's another post.) But for the time being, we all should willingly accept that we are glorified slaves by another name. So are birds. They are slaves to their existences. Birds must toil all day long to secure worms for eating and nests for shelter. Just as people did before civilization. Just as people do IN civilization today. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Suicide among the young in modern civilization is a symptom of a lack of preparedness for this reality. For some unknown reason, someone told us life should be easier than it actually is while we were growing up. Our brains are frozen in that state, shaped during our early development phase by this elaborate lie. This "someone" made a grave mistake in allowing us to believe this lie. And now they are refusing to pay the consequences for their actions, hoping this will all just blow over. It won't blow over. But virtually every other societal construct built over millennia will be blown down in the wake of this debacle, the most serious mistake of civilization ever made.

Religious people don't actually take the metaphysics seriously. They cling to life just like people who know there's no Heaven. You'd think they'd be happy to go to the best conceivable place in existence, but they have fear like everyone else, because they haven't really thought everything through.

They memorize soundbites from the Bible or some politician or something from a movie that applies to a given situation and don't have any deeper thoughts on the matter. It's why people can have so many intellectually inconsistent thoughts, eg, "The government better keep it's damn dirty hands off my Social Security".

Most people don't want to contemplate the obvious meaninglessness of life, and honestly, why bother?

Anyway, the suicide thing is curious. Probably has something to do with the internet and the perception of success. Americans make it a much easier option by having so many guns around.

For any zoomers reading this, if you are depressed or fed up with the outside world, you can take refuge inside your own selves. In order to do this, you have to conserve all your semen inside your body, and practice meditation 24/7. You can escape this samsara and enjoy uninterrupted peace and happiness and bliss.

Many wise men and sages became that way through the practice of Brahmacharya sadhana, both in ancient and in modern times. I'll leave this here for the benefit of all readers:

http://www.dlshq.org/download/brahmacharya.htm

Escape this world. Start meditation. Renounce all anger, and renounce all lust. Do all the practices in this book with full faith and I can guarantee you that your depression will be cured. However, note that I take no responsibility for what you decide to do with this knowledge.

Oh yeah, you sound like you're in great shape.

My suspicion is that it's the internet making the kids sick. Everyone but them seems to be having a great time in fabulous places, they can see the private parts of hottest chicks at any given time and therefore every possible date of appropriate hotness is a "roasty" and the (quite rightly) unattainable chicks are now bitches for not throwing themselves at these emotionally-stunted nerds...in short the kids think they "deserve" better and when they find out the world isn't giving up the goods, they freak out.

Not to mention the bots and trolls which heighten insecurity and hostility. Sometimes it seems like 4chan is nothing but Russian government employees trying to whip up the stupid blues and reds.

Maybe bad parenting has something to do with it too, but the internet seems to be the strongest and most obvious culprit.

Also everyone in high school throughout history has blamed the world and their parents and everything else for everything being shitty and they were right. They got over it.

Life is meaningless and unfair? No shit! Now go about carving out a life for yourself that's not too disagreeable and be happy that you're living the most comfortable life any generation of humans has ever experienced.
