Not OP, but Motl isn’t somebody we need to convert, but he’s long since become a hack who’s clearly bitter that he got kicked out of academia for being hard to work with and more than just an unpleasant person. He knows enough for laymen to look to him and see authority, but anyone who knows more than sophomore level math and science can see that he’s long since dried up any well of good ideas in favor of spouting legitimate vitriol. The dude claimed that “continuous math” (aka, the math he was familiar with because of its uses in physics) could provide provide in shades of grey (meaning that the answers would be complicated and conditional due to the nature of continuity), whereas discrete problems could not because..well he doesn’t really provide a reason. He says this to say that partial solutions toward P vs NP is really just a full one and it’s a simple question (though TCS concerns way more than just the discrete topics). This is a very sophomoric, “I googled the basics of your field and think I understand it” sort of thing an undergrad in physics does to stroke himself off.

So it’s obvious his ideology is stupid, but I think the real kicker is that we should strip any sort of credence of public trust in this guy’s ability to say anything meaningful about science, since it’s clear that it’s long gone.

lubos did it to himself. supposedly he's not such an asshole in real life, but anyone who is such a douchebag online just won't make it in academia. but maybe even in his work he was a douche too.

his advisor was Tom Banks, who is sort of a big deal, and Lubos got on some papers with like Nima and some other big names, but none of the papers were that important. and you can't expect that your colleagues aren't going to find out that you're ridiculously outspoken and controversial in your non-academic life and expect meh physics accomplishments to make up for that.

so in other words, his potential wasn't that huge, and he was proto-alt-right even before his whole blunder of a career. he probably makes fine money nowadays anyway; the blog alone is probably enough to live in poorville

Yeah bruh, but saying the "n-word" doesn't make you racist. It may be tasteless and offensive in most contexts, but it doesn't make you a racist or a Nazi or etc.

It's really funny but also kinda of sad looking back on all the shit that has transpired on this site since the early 2010s. I know the blue boards have basically become a Tumblr2.0 SJW shit fest in the last few years, but that's not how things used to be. There didn't used to be any SJWs on sci or lit. There also didn't used to be Nazis and white nationalists even in pol or b. I mean there was a lot of joking around and shit and ironic memeing, but pretty much nobody used to a Nazi. It used to be a pretty far left board. People liked trolling Christfags and neocons. They were against censorship and deplatforming. People on here tended to feel pretty strong about gay rights, police brutality against minorities, the excesses of capitalism, etc. This actually used to be basically what people today would call an LGBT safe space. We weren't radical SJW communists, but we also weren't Nazi's we weren't even left wing. Most of the actual old fags are gone now, but all the guys I knew irl who used 4chan back in the late 2000/early 2010s were self-described libertarian socialists, anarchists, greens, etc.

There wasn't a single event that changed things, but there are certainly a few keys moments. I think the biggest thing was the complex interaction between the medias portrayal of 4chan and anonymous in the early/mid 2010s, typical 4chan edgelord trolling, and calls for censorship. Initially when a lot of this stuff first started getting attention, 4chan still consisted of a bunch of edgy left-wing millennials that like to troll Christians and hardcore anti-gay Republican types.

I think a lot of people were initially pissed off but also kind of amused when we realized that we could repeatedly and consistently attract media attention by trolling.

good post, oldfag-anon

the key moments, as i see them, which i believe is the consensus view, were, in order of importance:
1) the fappening
this is when normies started looking to 4chan because the naked pics of jennifer lawrence were popular here but banned everywhere else. i mean, pretty sophomoric, but that's what 4chan has always been (pepe and "haha pee pee")
2) gamergate
obviously /v/ and the huge video game community on the /v*/ boards jumped on the video-games-and-feminism thing. it was a precursor to...
3) 2016 presidential election, Trump, grab-em-by-the-pussy
that was the heyday of /pol/, fueled by the most innovative shills

we live in the shadow of these three big events. that's why the politics have shifted here.

all i want to do here is shut down all the pseud threads that promote crap like anti-vaxx and climate denial and newage consciousness woo and the like

How do we stop SJWtards like OP from shitting up /sci/?

>> No.10730479

The attitude of a lot of 4channers still didn't shift at that point, but the change had begun. Over the last 5 years hundreds of thousands of people, mainly young middle class white men, began to take a completely different attitude.

The media had weaponized a narrative against us. The details themselves are worth discussing but that alone could take literally hours. Basically the media and political figures (unironically likely supported by the CIA) began to construct and disseminate a false narrative: these trolling incidents were presented as a genuine threat coming from radical political operatives who took themselves and their cause very seriously.

This was really a great tactic. Over the next few years the media, the government, and the normie public went on a campaign to smear the name of many of 4chans leftist "Activists" (really just trolls and pranksters). SJWs at CNN, local news stations, and Tumblr decided that they were going to systematically attempt to ruin these peoples lives and careers, and ideally push them to homelessness, permanent unemployment, and suicide (which yes, has happened, at least in the case of roastie August Ames).

Basically there were no Nazis or alt-righters on 4chan until the SJWs started showing up (primarily on blue boards llike this). You created this. 4chan was literally a bunch of young white men who were sick and tired of all the censorship, animal cruelty, homophobia, religious zealotry, US imperialism, and yes, even racism. That all changed because of people of SJWs that tell people to go back to pol, or call them incels, or labeling them Nazis and sexists for voting for Jill Stein and Gary Johnson.

no, it was created to post and talk about big anime tiddies. the politics changed because the platform outstripped its original use case. /news/ was the harbinger for /pol/ and this platform’s main strength became anonymous posting after pinterest and instagram created legit “image boards”

anonymous posting is the original sin of 4chan; both it’s most damning feature as well as its most tempting. /sci/ at least has some anons who post great (but rare) anonymous content

Yeah those are some definite highlights. I had already started moving more towards the center because I had heard about shit like the Sokal Hoax and had encounter some critical theory and postmodernist relativism in college. What really flipped me and made me realize that something really funny was going on not just in academia, but also in public life was Charlie Hebdo, so I think that was a big moment for me.

That's around the time people finally started discussing Islam 24/7 and we had the whole argument between Maher and Affleck, so I think that was also a big moment, but Trump and gamergate were definitely the biggest.

To use Hebdo as an example: at this point on a blue board probably ~30% of the people would be against the cartoonists and would call them poltards. ~30% would say that muslims are untermenshen that unironically need to be nukeds, ~25% would have no opinion, and only the remaining 5% would support the cartoonists not because they have some weird racial charged religious views about Islam, but rather because they recognize the importance of criticizing religion and maintaining free speech. On the other hand, if we traveled back in time to 2013 probably 90%+ of 4channers would fall into that last group, i.e. pretty much everyone one 4chan at that time would have supported Charlie Hebdo on leftist grounds. Now everyone on 4chan would either support Charlie Hebdo just because they're genuinely Islamophobic, or they would decry Hebdo as a racist "poltard" publication.

I'm not a poltard. I'm just a liberal/libertarian in the vein of Rawls, Parfit, Pinker, etc. Actually between 2012 and 2015 or so right around when I was graduating high school and first starting college I engaged in a lot of serious lefty shit: was a member of 3 different left-wing organizations and did some volunteer work for Planned Parenthood, and even (mildly) helped found a feminist club at my university. I just care about the environment and free speech and want to support small and local business over and above multinational corporations. I might not be opposed to more government funding for education and healthcare. Thats about it. Mostly free speech and the environment though really.

Btw I'm "mixed" just so you know, so I'm definitely not a white nationalist./Nazi/poltard/whatever you want to call me.

/pol/ has made 4chan better place. Over the course of years from libertarian left leaning moderators and users became hardcore rightwingers with ultimate racial ideology such as Nazism. Over the years /pol/ unveiled many conspiracies which were true such as jews are controling banks and with such power they are causing proxy wars and also instill their own ideology into countries they deem fit rendering them unable to fight back.

Now as we are approaching the end era of entertainment and we are closer to the era of enlightement we must understand why is /pol/ so successful. Because they dont take themselves too seriously. If you will make world laugh they will laugh with you as they say. What /pol/ did was just being far funnier than any other left leaning parasite ever could with their closed mind full of parroting catch phrases which they didnt even thought of themselves but had to get from Jewish ruling elite which resides intertionally and has no base of operations but uses many media and entertainment to control masses.
