So if molten nuclear fuel contacts 7000 cubic meters of water it can result in a megaton thermal explosion. Sounds extremely unlikely to me. This is not a nuclear reaction but rather hot water expanding as gas and making a bang but 2-4 MT blast... really? I call bullshit but maybe someone knows better than I do.

>The temperature of corium can be as high as 2400 °C (4,352 °F) in the first hours after the meltdown, potentially reaching over 2800 °C (5,072 °F). A large amount of heat can be released by reaction of metals (particularly zirconium) in corium with water. Flooding of the corium mass with water, or the drop of molten corium mass into a water pool, may result in a temperature spike and production of large amounts of hydrogen, which can result in a pressure spike in the containment vessel.

the heat and neutrons from molten corium can break apart water into hydrogen and oxygen

So is it possible for this to reach the equivalent of a 2-4 megaton TNT blast?

Have you ever seen a steam explosion?
In elementary school there was a problem with our boiler and they had to evacuate the entire block.

The risk is not only that the water would instantly vapourise into hydrogen and oxygen. The main risk is when the volume of it produced along with the rest of the fissioning lava creating a thermonuclear fusion reaction giving off lots more energy fusing the atoms back together.
Pretty sure thats why it was measured in megatons

Can you provide some evidence that fissioning lava and water can yield a fusion reaction because I find it very unlikely.

I did a back of the envelope calculation in a /pol/ thread yesterday assuming 2000°C and ten tons of material and came up at around the energy of a MOAB in terms of purely thermal energy in the molten lava, of course not all of which could be transformed into mechanical work. I know that the ideal gas law isnt perfect for a liquid but it should provide a rough ballpark. (Theres also a post of physics stackexchange that results in the same order of magnitude iirc)
The bigger point is that the big water tanks below the core were completely open, since the water from the firehoses was already just leaking in there, so the lava would boil the water and the steam would just exist through the same openings that the water came in through without pressure buildup that could cause an explosion. Basically like every time a volcano erupts near the sea and lava flows into the water.

>along with the rest of the fissioning lava
The lava was no longer undergoing fission since it was no longer surrounded by graphite. The residual heat is from the fission products of the uranium and is still a lot, but no where near enough to first split water molecules and then fuse the hydrogen into helium.

The only real danger I could find that was actually at least a tiny bit credible was that if the corium contained uranium in a sufficient concentration, it could conceivably thermally contract upon entering the water, enough for it to reach criticality again and start a fission reaction moderated by all the water, which in theeeeory could result in a large enough release of energy to fuck over the other three reactors and cause a much bigger mess (albeit no 2-4 MT explosion).
I think thats not something that was anywhere close to actually happening for a few reasons:
>The lava was mostly the sand-boron-mix, which was obviously designed to absorb neutrons, preventing a reaction
>the change in temperature wouldnt happen at speeds fast enough to get a chain reaction going, and I doubt uraniums thermal expansion coefficient is big enough to allow for any significant contraction at all
>as soon as a fission reaction would be set in motion, the material would heat up again and would stop being critical
This has all nothing to do with thermal explosions. I dont know if they actually thought a 2-4 MT explosion was at all possible or if thats something that was invented afterwards, but if they actually sent in those three men, they died for absolutely nothing.

They did send in those men, and all of them survived passed the 2000s. Two are still alive, the other died due to heart failure likely unrelated to the radiation.
