Pregnancy is long lasting and debilitating for the human species. That removes much of the incentive for women to go around trying risky new things. The greater incentive for men to do that creates an asymmetrical relationship where women end up acting as sexual selectors, deciding which man they allow insemination out of multiple suitors.
By acting as sexual selectors, they create pressures which push men to either extreme of exceptionally high and exceptionally low performance. Men become stronger and more intelligent but also more prone to retardation and early preventable death. Men have to work on becoming good enough to get through the gate while women decide who to let through the gate.
Hence why you have twice as many distinct female ancestors as you do distinct male ancestors.

It's not a conscious or rational thing anyone wants. It's just instinctual survivalism masquerading as an actual opinion.
Same reason people arguing against anti-natalists always think they're super-clever for pointing out how anti-natalists must love living or else they would have killed themselves already. It's the mistaken assumption our inborn feelings, wants, and behavior come from a place of measured reason and free will.

I have a saying, from a purely biological position, "It takes a man a few seconds to make a baby, but for a woman, it takes over nine months." Putting your egg (singular) in one basket is better than two baskets. One side of reproduction is incredibly disposable, the other is tasked with bearing the offspring. Rearing can be done by both parents, or one, and epigenetics has surely accounted for such rearing disparity. The sexual inequality of value makes sense. In society, men must prove their worth to gain access to reproduction. Not much is required from them but semen, so they must counter this with security, wealth, social power, etc. to prove they are worth something, to show that they can protect their children. To show that they are of good stock.

Now comes civilization. Man built a moral foundation so all men under a banner can prosper. The uniform distribution of the sexes is a hallmark of high culture, but polygamous civilization can exist if that group is in a constant state of fulfilling the disparity (war / sexual slavery). In Islam, it was common to be in a constant state of war. There was a huge influx in sexual slaves being brought through transaharan slave trade and through conquered lands. The laws of Islam were designed to destroy outside men by stripping them of their wealth and social opportunity. Women outnumbered men because of this, and also because of the constant conflict consuming soldiers. In comparison, the West, and to an extent East Asia, practiced monogamy, allowing relatively peaceful society to exist.
