Let's face it, this is by far the most dogshit board on all of 4channel. It's not even close.

Why are "hey guize this good degree??" or "post your grades and tell me how smart I am" threads allowed?

>> No.10693731

>>10693720
I was actually thinking about making a meta thread, so good on ya
I also hate that this board is polluted with high schoolers / undergrads making threads about if you should get a CS or Physics degree for good job prospects
Literally SHUT the fuck up, I’m going to report those threads from now on.

On another note, one of the best ways to clean up /sci/ is to create some sort of community project (like the /mlp/ board using Machine Learning voice synthesizing to immortalize those dumb cartoon horses). I propose /sci/ work together on some groundbreaking research, actually put our minds to good use instead of summing -1/12 all day everyday

>> No.10693737

Because science and math is not culture. The barrier to entry is too high, unlike /lit/ where anyone can sit down and read "to kill a mockingbird" or something, or /vg/. It's too broad as well, do you talk about math? science? both are vast and every degree is highly specialized with almost no overlap. Eventually it all just devolves into climate change threads and academic bragging since nobody knows what to talk about. Eventually it attracts waves of /pol/ and /x/ who just shit up the board.

>> No.10693738

>>10693720
There are worse boards here. /g/ for example has become indian shill forum that has nothing to do with technology and there are others

>> No.10693757

>>10693737
Not to mention you really have to sit down and carefully think about the statements you're going to post if you're really trying to discuss science/math. I've had lots of "wait a minute, is this universally true?" and "under what conditions could this not apply, and are those relevant to the current discussion", or even just "how much prior knowledge do I need to assume / how much preliminary info should I give for those who are not experts in my field (but able to follow along if the preliminaries are introduced properly)?" Add onto that the less-than-ideal TeX setting (yes there are shortcuts but anyone familiar with their own LaTeX interface of choice knows how annoying it can be to have to deal with /sci/'s mathjax implementation, not to mention the lack of some common packages (amsmath is a big one) and no macros) and it's honestly not very much worth it to go into deep, meaningful math/sci discussions here. The people who actually work on the cutting edge and are the experts (at least at some level) certainly don't have much to get out of posting here outside of some anonymous dick waving and *maybe* a half-baked experience of teaching someone something relatively elementary in their field in an /sqt/.

/tv/ is far, far worse. But I do agree with the sentiment. I remember 5 years ago things were better, still kind of shit, but better. Then a wave of pepes and wojacks (/pol/tards) came in and they never left. Going along >>10693757 I would say the only thread that actually reflects what /sci/ should sort of be like is /mg/, at least there we somewhat talk about the topics at hand. Further, I think >>10693731 has the right idea. I'm still actually working on the adecous goldbach problem an anon suggested a while back. The big issue is getting anons started and continuing. A while back there was a commutative algebra learning thread that didn't go too far since not enough anons could go along. It may become the case that /sci/ ends up becoming a super slow board like /trv/ but I think the quality will increase if people focus on making good threads like the goldbach and CA threads and just ignore everything else of have the jannies clean fucking house.

What are CA threads?

>> No.10693836

Most people who use this entire website are not smart enough to use a science board well. So those threads should be allowed. Otherwise, there would be literally nothing of value to anyone here.

>> No.10693868

the degree threads are SHIT but its refreshing to come to this board every now and then - wow an anonymous board where people sometimes talk about things at the leading edge of human knowledge rather than forever wallowing deeper into the base and inane

/tv/ is at least somewhat funny and people actually discuss films and television, whereas the threads on this board are a mix of blatant pol-faggotry and genuine retards spamming the board with their retarded fucking threads.
The ironic thing is that this used to be a good board, and now the math general is like the only place that still has posters who've graduated high-school.

The most interesting intersection between politics and science, IQ heritability is constantly shut down here as well. Why don't I just use Reddit or better yet neither at all? Christ, even YT has less politically correct content than this board allows.

If you talk about g or large domain aspects of g, you would get a far more interesting conversation than if you talked about the flawed metric which attempts to measure it.

>> No.10694067

>>10694053
I think you are conflating flawed with less precise; one of the main inspirations for IQ tests and possibly the reason for their large amounts of flack for being flawed, conversely coupled with their supposedly unreasonable predictive success, is the fact that when you start administering tests of any kind related to problem solving, be that automotive, or literary, the high and low scorers keep their rank regardless of the test, meaning that something fundamental to problem solving is being represented and is universal to any problem solving test, bearing in mind that their will always be a more precise way to define and test that.

Like I'm saying, this conversation is interesting and the inability to distinguish IQ or G heritability with the Facebook personality test level IQ threads is seemingly the problem.

Speaking of, why are the unpaid jannies not doing s.th. against these idiots? What do they want for their work? Certainly not money.

Have you been to /ck/? I'm not joking, /ck/ is literally offtopic animal porn and gore. Boards like /adv/ or /x/ are also far worse, /x/ is literally scitzos larping. /adv/ is /r9k/ but without the bot.

if you're 16 maybe. it was ok a few years ago, but now every thread is either got, capeshit or some stupid meme taken from reddit or knowyourmeme without irony.
>>10694882
/ck/ is probably the best board on this site

on topic: i think it has been suggested a number of times, but a sci-captcha would resolve many of the issues raised. to post you'd be asked to solve a multiple choice question in a set time. the question should be relatively easy and quick to answer for a stem student, but should take a longer time to look up than is given, preventing anybody not familiar with the material from posting.
in a word, the question would set a base level of knowledge required to post here.
an example i posted last time was:

which of the following is/are false?
[eqn] \square~ f \text{ is differentiable} \rightarrow f \text{ is continuous}\\
\square~ f \text{ is monotonic} \rightarrow f \text{ is integrable}\\
\square~ f \text{ is integrable} \rightarrow f \text { is differentiable} [/eqn]
these captchas would take at most 4 clicks compared to the 5 (though often more) currently, and i'm pretty sure most people who have passed calc 1 could answer the above just as quickly as they could identify a store front.
the only downside is that /sci/ is already a slow board and with this it would end up like /po/.

>> No.10694981

Comparatively, /sci/ is pretty mid-low tier in terms of board traffic.
so it probably doesn't have as many dedicated jannies. It's probably like one or two grad students who just decide to clean in their free time. I've noticed the board will get really shit up and then suddenly all the IQ and college advice threads get wiped randomly.
The best thing you can do is report everything from obvious rule breaking posts to low quality ones so it catches their attention faster due to the number of reports. Also it never hurts to take a page from /fit/ and screech about reading the sticky.

Because science is keystone of skeptical inquiry, and a fine place to chip away at if disinformation and other exceptionally malicious mischief is the game. Some people enjoy butchering random strangers, some people enjoy destroying cultural institutions, and some enjoy the huge profits to be made from taking a dumbed-down public for a ride. Some people are absolute globetrotting vandalizing trash whose damage is maddeningly difficult to limit where anonymity makes their secret projects all too easy to conduct. If their comedy is tiresomely cold, and even in rant they show no heat, their calculation isn't subtle enough to win for long. I think it will get better, but most of that action will be done behind the boards, and initiated from elsewhere.

Based OP and completely agree. I’ve always loved /sci/ as a concept but I rarely browse it because I’m always disappointed when I come here. It’s always highschoolers asking about what a good degree for university would be or students posting their math questions they need help on.
