GPA is bullshit in a context of grade inflation. Also, it induces students to seek easier classes instead of challenging themselves. Not to mention using a numeric value for grades makes much more sense than A/B/C/D/F. America might good at research, but the way they measure things is full retarded.

I graduated with a 3.0 in major and something like a 3.3 overall (thanks humanities requirements) about three years ago. It took me about nine months, but I got a pretty nice job afterwards (though I didn't like the work, personally) and four months later I'm now employed as a mathematician.
What I recommend is to focus on making yourself employable if you want a job. I really focused on becoming a good programmer and continuing math research on my own, and it was very fulfilling to see these efforts pay off.
Having a good GPA in math doesn't necessarily mean you're suited for a job requiring a lot of math, but it's an easy first check that some employers have the luxury of making. You'll have to find an employer that looks past that and conducts a more thorough evaluation of your skillset.

It isn’t at all the same situation depending on your field, there are a finite number of labs and unis with budgets to facilitate certain research and without the requisite grades, gre, letters of recc and aptitude you will be passed over without any chance of making up for your deficiencies. Grades matter, institution matters, your connections matter; trying to avoid this is immature possibly even self hating in its divorce from reality.

I never said they didn't matter, I never came close to saying that. Your reading comprehension is either severly lacking or you're so interested in saying something that you're not even checking to make sure it's an appropriate response. Let me be more clear for you.
Every employer/university has different entry requirements. Some of them have the luxury of being able to take their pick from "top performers", while others have to work a little harder to find the diamonds in rough. Still others just have lower standards. If you build yourself correctly, you will find that a poor GPA or test scores do not preclude you from getting a neat job or doing research somewhere cool. Moreover, once you're in, you're in; what university you got your Bachelors at matters less and less as you grow. Certainly, if you're actually interested in doing good work or doing research you enjoy, that will show through.
Trying to do research at a top 10 school for the sake of being able to say "I did research at a top 10 school!" is not something adults should be doing because as an adult you ought to be focused on accomplishing more fulfilling things. I'm not saying this is necessarily your attitude, but it's certainly one that I see a lot on this board and it's puzzling.

I think you were also trying to point at some sort of scarcity when finding places to do research. At least in mathematics, there are universities that fall into each of the categories I mentioned regarding acceptance criteria for all of the major fields of research. I can't speak to other fields. However, it's rare for a student to have an exact idea of what they want to research anyways as they begin a research program.

That being said I have only ever received 1 B in my major and the professor who gave me said B was fired before that semester even ended because he was awful.
