The numerals we use today are more similar to the Arabs' numerals. They look nothing like the original Indian symbols. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brahmi_numerals Arabs were the immediate folks who gave it to Europeans, so they're called Arabic numerals - we bought a product that Arabs got from elsewhere.

A similar misnomer: the French call gypsies "Bohemians" or "Romani people" although the original source is... the same (Northern) India, which actually makes sense since the average Indian IQ is about 82.
