This word wasn't popular 200 years ago and developed in tandem on each side of the pond. The Greek definition was more like "Lessons or anything learned" so, you can see that math's is shortened mathematics and " ' " is dropped. Math is shortened to a specific type of lesson in the common tradition of dropping an "s" for singular. They are equally wrong in the way that language is mutilated through tha ages and therefore equally correct and mutually understandable. Anyone who cares is kinda dumb.
