a game played with symbols on paper. the symbols move around in accordance with a set of rules called axioms.

its actually really boring desu. the stuff you do with algebra (engineering) is more interesting, more useful, and harder.

should i read Serge Lang Algebra if i am CS student? I wonder if it could help me with more theoretical areas that are using similiar notation and maybe way of thinking: automata theory, functional programming, algorithms

If you’re in programming language theory or complexity, algebra is invaluable. Algebraic geometry is pretty big in TCS circles

Don’t really know what they’re talking about. Physics majors don’t learn any algebra nor topology until grad school, and neither do CS majors (though for CS, since it is fairly pure, this is less excusable). So I don’t think this sort of sentiment is valid.

Also, I would recommend Aluffi, Rotman, and/or Humphreys. Artin has good exercises but I’m not a fan of his book
