Father fucking forgive me, if I have to hear one more mouse-voices brainlet in my CS seminar say “did you know that all the positive integers added together equals -1/12, yeah it’s actually true isn’t that crazy” again I’m going to overturn a desk and do a barrel roll out the fucking window
That fucking video. That motherfucking video, man.

This shit is as old as string theory and just as interesting.

Anyone have the screencap of Anon talking about how he will get money everyday and the amount he gets increases everyday, but he doesn't take the deal because he's too smart and knows he will get negative money (-1/12) at the end? I want to see it so bad rn

numberphile was wrong.

the guy in the video, dr. padilla, is a physicist with little math background. basically he's an idiot who doesn't know math well enough to be talking about it.

mathologer got it right and cleaned up the mess - to the degree that it was possible, because numberphile's claims have spread viraly like a disease and poisoned many laymen minds..

i understand that the sum of all naturals is a re generalization of summation and isnt the natural intuition of sum, but why is it applicable in physics? any anon know this?

It's used somewhere in string theory, the definition of the beat function or something. I don't quite remember. Those are quantum fields and therefore defined on complex numbers, hence the need for (and the possibility to do) analytic continuation.

>> No.10621493

>>10621288
the only reason you think it shouldnt be applicable is because youve accepted that "infinite series only make sense when theyre intuitive" but that bullshit
the universe doesnt care what your definition of infinite series is
so artificially making a distinction based on intuition
"1 + 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 +... makes sense"
but "1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +... doesnt because my brain ouchie"
doesnt correspond to reality, just to your intuition
if you just use the re generalization from the beginning, then theres nothing strange about being able to use it in physics

electroboom was questioning a statement from lewin about kirchkoff's law. electroboom thought he'd found a counter-example to lewin. lewin was a huge dick and just dismissed him out of hand. it turned out electroboom was wrong but it was because of a really fiddly point about how he was doing his measurements and how that related to what lewin was talking about.
