At some point, some people realize that it's not worth going through all the trouble just to prove yourself or some people who actually don't care about you that you're worth it. Not saying that those who worked hard in engineering, economics etc. and got rich because they did what they loved doing is bad. But if you do things just for the sake of becoming rich, then you're probably not smart.

Because you see wealth and one's "smartness" are not correlated. One can be born into a wealthy family and suffer from retardation, meanwhile another can be born into a family below the poverty line and still be gifted. You assume that all wealthy people are smart, and that they used their brains to get that far in life. Your mistake was assuming all smart people are wealthy when in reality they are not correlated. In fact, if wealth was based on smartness, then university professors would be near the top of the food chain and make more money than all of you combined.

Drugs and whoores make me happy. If I work hard enough to be rich, I'll have a bunch of extra money, which will only be a liability in the end, as I will end up uncontrollably spiraling into an uncontrollable pit of degeneracy once I retire early and wealthy and have a bunch of free time and not a care in the world. The thing is that becoming extremely wealthy is mostly chance, but you can become wealthy and rich literally by following rules.

If you live in a first world country there are outlined paths to being rich where the only thing needed from your part is to not fuck it up too badly. Not to mention all the riskier shit you can do to speed up that process but is ultimately unnecessary if your goal is only to become rich.

There is a statistic that says that over 50% of Americans become part of the top 10% for at least a year. And being top 10% of America not only makes a millionaire but makes you like top 0.1% in the world.

Source: https://www.aei.org/publication/evidence-shows-significant-income-mobility-in-the-us-73-of-americans-were-in-the-top-20-for-at-least-a-year/print/

What does security afford you? I made like 110k out of the gate at a really good job where the cost of living wasn't too high. I got bored after 2 years and left. During that time, I used the money I saved up (I didn't have more than $5000 in debt from undergrad) to take classes in math at a nearby school as a non matriculating student. I then took their masters program after getting some A's, wrote a thesis + 2 papers with a professor, and got into a good grad school (which prompted me to quit my job).

I was (and am) legitimately happier as a grad student on 30k than I was with 110k spending my days doing entry level STEM work. The job growth would have put me on the track for 170k in less than a decade, but all that security doesn't buy what I actually want.

I'm now on the tenure track and get around 85k, and the average tenured professor here makes between 100k - 160k. I live comfortably, am able to buy whatever I please, and my career is more or less in my hands; I get to do what I want, and all I had to do was pass through some uncertainty for a while. If this is what you get when you give up security, then security is indeed very valuable; however, you have to cash it in and let it go for it to be of any value in the first place

>You're associating the levels of stress of the high paying job with your now low stress "choice" as a grad student
Not exactly. My high paying job wasn't very stressful, at least not most of the time. It was pretty involved, but I never had to do overtime or strain myself at work. It was just uninteresting to me
> If you were truly "smart" like what the OP was getting at you would have been able to have the money associated with the high stress job with the low stress environment of grad school.
If we're talking about "smart" in the sense OP is asking (which is better described as opportunistic), I didn't focus on the money. If anything, academia was higher stress, but the deadlines / pressure were more from my personal investment in my career than anything about getting the work done.
>A la you are not smart but deluded into thinking its better to be poor
I'm not poor. At every stage of my life, even during the big pay cut, I had enough money to live comfortably. It had very little to do with stress and more about doing something I enjoyed.

It's weird that you associate money as the objective of intelligent people. It is true that intelligent people can apply their talents to get rich. However, it's just as important to realize there's a way to live comfortably, do something like a PhD, and still have a fairly large sum of personal money. My goal wasn't to get rich; it was to become an academic, and I did so while still having monetary returns enough to live comfortably.

Anyway, this post reeks of pseudointellectual.

If you’re smart, assuming you are not hit by career or life ruining unfortunate events, you can expect to start getting financially comfortable in your late 40s and 50s.

There is nothing unusual in being broke in your 20s and 30s and 90% of people can expect that to be the case.

These success stories of young guys striking it rich, like Zuckerberg or Elon Musk, are actually extremely rare. That’s why we pay so much attention to them.

“America is the wealthiest nation on Earth, but its people are mainly poor, and poor Americans are urged to hate themselves. To quote the American humorist Kin Hubbard, 'It ain’t no disgrace to be poor, but it might as well be.' It is in fact a crime for an American to be poor, even though America is a nation of poor. Every other nation has folk traditions of men who were poor but extremely wise and virtuous, and therefore more estimable than anyone with power and gold. No such tales are told by the American poor. They mock themselves and glorify their betters. The meanest eating or drinking establishment, owned by a man who is himself poor, is very likely to have a sign on its wall asking this cruel question: 'if you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich?' There will also be an American flag no larger than a child’s hand – glued to a lollipop stick and flying from the cash register.

Americans, like human beings everywhere, believe many things that are obviously untrue. Their most destructive untruth is that it is very easy for any American to make money. They will not acknowledge how in fact hard money is to come by, and, therefore, those who have no money blame and blame and blame themselves. This inward blame has been a treasure for the rich and powerful, who have had to do less for their poor, publicly and privately, than any other ruling class since, say Napoleonic times. Many novelties have come from America. The most startling of these, a thing without precedent, is a mass of undignified poor. They do not love one another because they do not love themselves.”

What a dumb argument, people attempt to become rich to gain power (money), not to be rich just so they can say they're rich (though rich people have no problem shouting how rich they are). What humans actually want is power, and most ways to achieve this is through resources (money) (power). Whether or not you want power is invalid, all of humanity is chasing after it, even you. You have tricked yourself into thinking you are content with the amount of power you currently hold, a delusion implied from your post. In truth, you're just an average midwit, holding this notion that you're somehow more mature than someone who wants power (money).

You're not.

>You see, I'm plenty rich, but the richness of the soul and mind cannot have a monetary value assigned to them.
Then stare just above them with a face of enlightment, then walk the dinosaur.

>rich doesn't make me happy
>I don't actually want to be rich
>I'm spiritually enlightened and have no connection to material things
So much fucking coping. Why can't you all just accept that you're a failures and try harder in the future? The very act of you trying to deny your desire is the reason you self sabotage and became a failure.

You would be able to focus more on the things that you are more passionate about without getting bothered about the cost associated with it.

If *you're* so smart, OP, why do you shitpost instead of posting intelligent, on-topic, interesting threads?
