hey sci, sorry for the HOMEWORK thread but I can't get this question. it is basic optics and I assume that you guys know your optics.

I had to make a graph of a refraction experiment with a cylindrical mirror, with sin(r) on x and sin(i) on y, with n being the slope.

the question is: "is your graph consistent with the law of refraction? explain."

I know that my graph is consistent with that, and I know what the law of refraction is, but I can't think of an explanation for the life of me.

Why do you need an explanation? You just need to demonstrate that your experiment was un/successful.
So given the optical density of the materials and the angle of incidence, do your results coincide with what would be expected from the law of refraction?

What is the relation between sin(r) and sin(i), according to the law of refraction? Try to express sin(i) as a function of sin(r) -> you'll have a function of y in terms of x and can show the typical shape of the curve.

I always found the correct way to "explain" how results are successful or not is to say something like:

"As you can see, XXX is consistent with Y's law which states: "

Boom, answer done.
