yesterday it takes half hour to write times tables, next time it take 20 min. that how you know it progress.

I don't dress like that though

They don't. This is how mathemagicians measure their power level
(left-to-right)
>shorts have too similar color to socks, doesn't want people to see his power level, an algebraic number theorist
>the color contrast tells immediately that this is an extremely powerful being, motivic homotopy is his domain
>weak, laughably weak powerlevel, socks barely reach his ankles, and have the same colour as his shorts, it's immediately obvious that this guy is a measely symplectic geometer

Would I fool somebody if I wore my programming socks with sandals?

>> No.10593789

>>10593617
Nobody falls for that. Dress socks are the most over-the-top socks that you can see an actual mathemagician wear. But usually, those are reserved for the overcompensating butthurts, like topologists or mathematical physishits.
Unless you're a woman. Then you can wear any kind of socks and sandals, you suck at math anyway so nobody cares about your powerlevel.

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to actually wear a lab coat regularly to the office. How quickly would it go from "haha how funny good jokes mate" to "what the fuck is wrong with this fucking psychopath?"? (Granted I work in theoretical physics, but I think the idea still applies.)

I mean, fucking med school students get to wear their white coats wherever they go, why can't us science and math chads have some cool apparel too?

Pretty much. But people generally don't pretend higher category theory is hard, just autistic.
In my previous field, people would consider pic related a deep and profound result. Go figure.

Nah, it's just this particular type of work. I don't even thing mathematical physishits use cats all that much.
There's plenty of autism to be found in category theory and it has contact with all fields of math, so you can just pick whatever you like and unleash your autism.

I wish I still had it saved, it's about the fashion code on Wall Street and how mercilessly strict it is by brands and outfits, there are certain items you just absolutely do not wear unless you want to either lose your job, never be promoted or outright despised.

At first it's funny but you kind of realize how absolutely pathetic and cliquey it is.

Then it talks about engineers and that nobody really gives a shit whatsoever and you have guys wearing jeans and flannels.
