Is data science a real science? What are your experiences with data science if any?

It's just applied statistics. I'm not really sure who calls 'data scientist' a 'sexy dreamjob' considering most of the actual data scientist jobs that are open have you gather data in various ways (some more shitty than the other). The ones making the models have a lot of experience. But until you get that experience or a phd in it you're stuck doing relatively well paid work (I mean you easily get 1.8-2.2 * median) that isn't a lot of fun.

Can i find a job as a data scientist though lacking several skills (not underlined)?

it's insane, professing to anybody that you use python or ruby would have gotten you laughed at 10 years ago

and now every kid wants to be a python programmer lmfao

No, data science is not a real science.

Son I eat data sets from breakfast. I store my daily workout schedule in MySQL and I calculate my protein intake using R. My intellect rivals your favorite deep learning algorithm. Because I go all the way. Do not call me a programmer; a codemonkey; a number cruncher or a bean counter. I'm the intellect behind it all. Data scientist? Bitch I AM the science.

yes, a lot of it is learned on the job
and insurance place I toured (a pretty large one) had an econ major doing data collection

Idk about "real science", I think the term science is a philosophical misnomer much like computer science is -- it's an interdisciplinary field that encompasses a lot of applied stats and math, computer science and software engineering/architecture skills. As well as less glamarous stuff like data engineering (munging/cleaning) and setting up pipelines.

but it's not a meme, the reason it's so hyped is because there's been such a massive proliferation in data in the last 10 years and people are still figuring out how to make sense of it all. There's roughly 5TB of data for every human on earth -- companies still figuring out how to monetize the data, governments trying to make policy decision, etc.

Python and R are pretty easy to pick up if you have CS background. Fun too, lots of libraries being available makes it really easy to build cool shit.

that's good to know, i was worried a new branch of science had popped up under my nose and I wondered how I could be that out of it

Just because the state of the field is a meme right now (cause the concept is new) doesn't mean the field is inherently a meme

>Is data science a real science?
It was called "data analysis" before everyone wanted to be some kind of scientist.
