at my uni (Alabama) no calculators other than a little shitty one that can only do very basic function were allowed in math courses. In engineering courses you could use whatever you wanted, though.

HP 48G was the last meaningful advancement of calculators. I have purchased ~50 of them from Ebay since 2001. Each is sealed in an nitrogen-purged chamber. If you can't do it with an HP 48G then you it is not worth doing.

The HP Prime is very convenient for me. I'm currently taking vector calculus, differential equations, and discrete math, and it can handle everything I throw it at. The help menu is very nice because I don't feel like using the manual every time I use a new function. It also has a phone app which makes it even more convenient. Since most professors don't even allow graphing calculators on math exams, you can just use the app ($20 for the full version, but I just pirated the apk) until a class requires it.

For differential equations I am only allowed a scientific calculator, so I went out and bought a Casio fx-991ex. I'll need it for the fundamentals of engineering exam eventually so spending $20 on a weaker calculator was not too annoying.

Its only issue I found is that it has problems simplifying trig functions. There may be a setting for this, but I havn't found it.

The price point alone makes it a much better value than the Texas monopolies nspire, and the phone app makes it a no brainer.

What's the best scientific calculator or whatever most professors will let you use in a class that permits calculators? Most scientific calculators feel really clunky after using a graphing calculator for so long, especially the display.
