Finding and keeping track of events, messaging friends, following a few interests. The vast majority of people I know rarely post and if they do it's usually asking people for help with something or sharing something they think is funny, it's hardly a massive shitfest and if it gets that way you can always unfriend/unfollow those people/pages.
The science pages (for specific experiments/institutions like CERN, not IFLS or popsci) are usually pretty genuine scientists just posting what they're up to or pretty pictures of their equipment. Aesthetic function graphposting is a decent group I like following
