Gentlemen. Meet the Mandelbulb

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xO5fXGqeM5c

my question is: Does it have infinite surface area?

>> No.1057254

fuck off back to #math

>> No.1057273

Yes.

where is this ... #math ... you speak of?

>>1057273
I was just talking to a math teacher and they said it would have a finite surface area

What in the fuck is this monstrosity?

>> No.1057349

hooooooooooooooly shit this is pretty fucking sweet.

Yeah, it has infinite surface area.

>> No.1057353

What is the purpose of this?

I mean what purpose does the Mandelbrot set have in math?

It makes people interested in math.

but seriously, something to look at while stoned

lol yeah, but Mandelbrot and other fractal patterns are also of interest in biology. It shows up in life in surprising ways, and could have uses in things like medicine and in computer architecture.

Trolled.

A mandelbulb is 5cm by 5cm by 5cm. It has infinite surface area.

I used to be able to see fuzzy things of images like this if i closed my eyes and firmly pressed my closed hand against them.

The mendelblot has a finite area and perimeter, it converges to a number despite having infinitely many details, so as to why there are people saying that the surface area of the mendelbulb is infinite without proof is beyond me...

Reference: Flaterland, don't remember the author.

>>1057573
The Mandelbrot set has a finite area, yes, but I'm pretty sure its perimeter is of infinite length.

(Indeed, there is some empirical evidence implying that the perimeter of the Mandelbrot set has a nonzero *area*.)

If it had infinite surface area, anything but not moving would have infinite friction, so it could not grow.

>> No.1057710

>>1057700
This is utter nonsense.

I have no idea what the hell you *meant* to say, but I'm pretty sure that's nonsense too.

>implying it could exist in nature
fractals approximate things in nature well, though (or, rather nature approximates fractals)

>> No.1057745

>>1057710

Let me put it in more simple terms.

If plant have infinite surface area,
then any movement of the plant would cause infinite friction to occur.
If infinite friction occurs, then the object cannot move.

>> No.1057803

>>1057745
Once again, fractals are mathematic constructs. This is not a plant. It may look like a plant, but it's a computer generated image. A plant could never have infinite detail (barring the possibility of the fractal nature of spacetime, but then friction ceases to matter, as does the plant at those tiny scales), and therefore we would not be having this discussion.
