Reddit keeps spouting the "fusion is always 20 years away" meme even though it's about 5 years away and the facility has solid science behind it and is being build right now.

We have theoretical proof of it providing net energy as well so it's not like it's some gamble or lighting in a bottle or anything.

No. It's all about magnetic field strength. ITER was planned with the strongest magnets they had available. But ITER was planned ages ago.
Magnetic field strength actually influences fusion output far more than size increases.
The problem with this approach is that they need to prevent the machine from tearing itself apart with these magnets.
