Are 99% of PHDs pointless outside of advancing the researchers career?

No.
You read about their failures more because a PhD is more impressive.
For ever 1 PhD who isn't successful, there are 5 undergrads who couldn't find a job after school. If they wait too long, they can't even go back to school. At least the unemployed PhD has respect. Unemployed undergrad gets nothing. A PhD isn't a sunk cost. If you can't make it with a PhD, you certainly wouldn't have made it with undergrad alone.

A PhD is not the best choice unless you want to

>a.) do research *for someone else* (either for a university, an institution, a company etc.)

or

>b.) bragging rights

or

>c.) Networking

or

>d.) you just really want to do a PhD

I made an app during my math undergrad which made me some money. Used that money to make more software, which made me more money. Now I'm comfortably pulling in $300k-$350k per month from my software and other investments (real estate, stocks etc.), and it's pretty much all passive (the software makes like 90% of that money though). Never went beyond undergrad. Am currently 24.

I spend most of my time just doing math, working on whatever I'm interested in, without having to deal with anyone and their fucking bullshit (no office politics, no sucking some idiot's dick for grants and funds, no TA'ing or any other fucking running around).

And then there's you guys, slaving away for 80 hrs a week as a postdoc at age 32 for $33k/year.

Today I woke up at 10, did some math until around 2, went to the gym, longboarded to the beach and smoked a jay, went home and did some more math, and now I'm just gonna pass out high to trailerpark boys in my comfy 8000 sqft luxury-but-not-overly-so house.

So how would you rather live your life? What's important to you?

If by apps you mean phone apps (which I assume you do), then I don't make them anymore. The apps were just the starting point that gave me a little momentum; I've made my "real money" creating sophisticated software in the realm of big data. I earn money by licensing this software.

>>10565031
what am I selling? lol

>>10565032
Just pick a project and figure it out. For me, the first thing I did was I created an instagram clone because it seemed interesting and I wanted to learn how to make a social media app. I just watched tons of youtube videos on programming, and of course I had some experience with python from my undergrad. But yeah you gotta work hard at it, like at least a few hours a day, every day, to get good in a reasonably short amount of time.

>>10565041
That's not how you do it. I should've been more clear that the apps were just the starting point. Here's what you do:
>figure out something that can make you $1000 / month
>use that money to figure out something else that can make you $5000 / month
At this point you can probably quit your job once you've saved up enough money to last you a year. Then, you just keep shooting for new targets. You don't go from 0 to $300k / month. There's like 20 steps inbetween.

Don’t take this seriously. At least the app development part. I have experience making iOS apps. I still make 200$ a month off them. You’re competing with poos and the barrier to entry is so low that the market is oversaturated. Sure poos make bad software usually, but a few of them are good and 200$ a month to them is better than the average monthly salary. If you’re smart I would look into different areas of software development. Specifically tools to make cloud software development easier or something where you can compete with less autists/poos.

Also developing good software is not something you do on a whim. It takes many years learning all the proper techniques, optimizations, and algorithms to make robust software.
