DO vs MD edition

Last thread reached bump limit.
old: >>10545921

We discuss research, offer advice (the best advice we give is "SEE YOUR FUCKING FAMILY PHYSICIAN), shitpost and make fun of dumb premeds.

Based labfags,Techs,PA's, NP's and RN's (students too) are welcome!

Remember, if you want to discuss vaccines, please make your own thread because it usually takes a lot of replies and the discussion usually degenerates.

Do I have a shot with a DO or MD school?

I was a complete fuckup (almost dropped out to go to culinary school) my first two years in my undergrad, scraped by with C-‘s, C’s, and the occasional B. Ended up getting my shit together my junior year and finishing strong (good upward trend).

>mcat repeats

I’ve discussed it with a DO Regional Director that operates through my town. (They send their california students through rotations in my hometown, which is rural california). >>10555670
I’m planning the upcoming cycle, but if it falls through I have a research position with a surgeon lined up as a backup for the year. The medical missions I’ve been on have been quite helpful, considering its places where I go to regularly rather than doing that “one week and then never coming back schtick”

>> No.10555704

>>10555685
Ok then I’d give you pretty good odds. Normally in MD medical missions are frowned upon as “medical tourism” but if you have actually returned to the same places over time then I think it’s a valid activity. As long as you apply early and to lots of DO schools I’d expect some interviews.

The rule of thumb is that if you can smell patients, then it’s clinical volunteering. Adcoms want to see both clinical and non clinical volunteering showing commitment to your community (i.e., volunteer at a food bank, tutor underprivileged kids for free, etc.). Anything in a hospital, no matter how trivial, is clinical exposure. It doesn’t really matter what it does. Obviously you won’t be doing anything meaningful as a pre-med. It’s more about knowing what you’re getting in to in regards to patient contact and the frenzied environment.

Pretty sure I will inevitably just fucking fail here and go to Australia. I'm interested in primary care anyway so being an IMG doesn't really matter but I doubt I'll be able to come back to Canada for residency. Any IMG's here? Does everyone regard you as a self hating failure?

Me. Posted about it yesterday. Have been out-and-out bullied by two resident surgeons as a medical student. Ignoring my questions, making me get coffee for them and the other students, telling patients I’m just here on work experience, giving all the other students easy questions and then asking me something ludicrously obscure, and, yes, farting on me.

Tomorrow I’ll be reporting them to both their attending surgeon and the manager of their surgical department, so will let you guys know how that goes.

My current job pays well but I hate it, and am considering pursuing a nursing career via an accelerated BSN program. Health care / medicine has always interested me, I work well with people, I'm fairly intelligent, and can multitask and perform well under pressure. I think I'd make a good nurse, and I have a supportive family and enough savings so that I'd only have to take out modest loans.

I have no problem with bodily fluids / wiping assholes for a living - if I can make a positive impact on just one person's life it will be infinitely more fulfilling than my current dead-end job.

At least in Canada, nursing is a excellent profession. There is plenty of room to be promoted. CRNA nurses earn more then some surgeons and specialists, in Canada. You can also work in administration. In Canada, an regular RN has an hourly salary 80% of a doctor; your also protected by a good union in Canada.
Also, plenty of nurses work outside of a hospital. In office environments, working on things like immunizations plans and stuff.

I'm half tempted to find a similarly-minded OR nurse, and when the patient seems like they'd be willing to sue tip them off and hope to advance legal precedent and get that hospital to make policy changes. Hey now stop putting words in my mouth and being rude. I never said you were a psychopath. Furthermore I read exactly what you said. You're not very empathetic at least outwardly. You're probably not a psycho but maybe have some kind of emotional and social deficiencies if I had to guess. It sounds like you have difficulty expressing yourself. I think you should get yourself checked out by a psychiatrist or maybe at least see a therapist. You sound like you need someone to talk to.

As for me, yes I have some problems but it is mainly from depression and some complicated situations I probably should not talk about here

Maybe I do but I don't really see what that has to do with my overall capability to succeed in medicine.
I don't see how you'd gather from my posts that I "need someone to talk to" especially since people express themselves way differently on here than they do IRL.

Well I just believe in the biopsychosocial model of care. There are shortcomings to strictly the medical model. Health encompasses much more than a lot of people realize. It is important to adopt a holistic style of medical practice tjat focuses on all aspects of a persons well being.

Just FYI, male OB/GYN students have a horrible time getting procedures and experience done they need. Most of the time patients don’t want students involved, especially males. I’m not defending the practice but pointing out why it happens. My OB/GYN rotation was utterly pointless. I was sent home or just studied elsewhere for basically the entire time because of patients not wanting med students present. Can’t imagine how much of a pain in the ass it would be if you actually wanted to do OB/GYN.

Kek, when I had ER rotations, a young female came in with pelvic pain. Altough she wanted me and a colleague out of there while she got checked the attending didn't give a fuck, told her we're future doctors and have to learn. So the gal shut up and we got to see procedures and pussy. (In the end she had an ectopic pregnancy that got detected very early) Is that shit a law in America or something? (Romanian here)

Clearly just jk. I find it stupid how just getting a shit professor whose section has a 13% drop out rate compared to 2% for the same class but different section and professor, is all it takes to severely alter your career path.

This is also why I don't respect most medical professional as much anymore. A few of you guys are cool and deserve it, but I think most either save-scummed, sucked dick, used nepotism, or complained their way to good grade/acceptance. To put this in perspective:
