"Numbers" as we teach children should be taught as 1D vectors from day one. The only mathematical operations there are, are "stretching" (multiplication by a scalar) and addition. From that, you can do the inverse of those by "squashing" (division) and subtraction.

This then blends seamlessly into high-school level math, Cartesian coordinates, linear algebra, and so on.

From those two (or four) simple, fundamental operations, all other mathematical operations can be "built" by combining them like Lego.
